Moyer-rebuilt little-used V-drive engine for parts for sale

It had little use but appeared to develop a cooling water leak (water in oil). Oil was changed frequently after leak discovered to preserve integrity of components.

Would prefer to sell block with major components (head, manifold, reversing gear) as one.

    Have all parts including V-drive.

    Pls PM me with offers.

    Thanks.

Any idea what is leaking? Couldn't you send it back to Moyer? I can't imagine they sell leaking engines on purpose.

I'd imagine MMI would take a look.

I bought a Moyer rebuild some years ago for my C&C 34 (before I had the guts to rebuild one myself). Once installed, it made a knocking sound in the lower block. Temp, pressure were fine, and it ran well, but that noise was wrong. Had a mechanic friend take a listen. He didn't know what to make of it. I called Don, he immediately suggested I bring it back to his shop. His guys took it apart, put it back together. They didn't find anything...I reinstalled it, and the noise was gone. Of course, there was no charge for this. On top of that, Don sent me the by pass kit for the cooling system.

I wish I had a spot in my workshop for this baby. I'm on Long Island!! Bummer.

            Any idea why it leaks?
Any rough idea how much you are selling it for?

I acquired to use for spares for mine - which is a fresh water cooled Moyer rebuilt with less than 300 hours - so I have no reason to pursue with Moyer although I would have if I had purchased it from him.

I don't know what was leaking. I hoped to take it apart some time to find out - possibly fix and resell depending on what I might have used as parts by then. It had good compression and seemed to start and run ok prior to removal.

I was thinking something around $750 since Moyer gives $500 for a core for rebuild.

Did you perform a cooling system pressure test to try and localize the breach (block/head, manifold or pump)?

I didn't know enough to do that. How would you go about doing that?

Check out this thread, all of it (not very long). It covers it pretty well including other links.

                      Thanks. Looks reasonably straight forward.

How much for recently rebuilt parts engine?

It seems that my idea of the value of this was off?

I would appreciate opinions re an appropriate price given that it was Moyer rebuilt with little use and possibly salvageable.

                        Thanks for any input.

I recently parted out a Universal M25XP marine diesel. I acquired it in seized condition after a sea water incursion. I pretty much sold everything except for the 'short block.' Proceeds amounted to $1000.00

I mention this only because you referred to it as a parts engine. It might be worth a little investigation to see if the block is viable and if it is, get the engine back into running condition. Sure, it will cost a little bit but in the end a Moyer rebuilt could fetch thousands IMO.

Who builds them better than Don?

                            Thanks again for the input.

Now that I plan to sell the boat for which I intended to keep this for parts, my intention was to see if I could clear some space at home without spending time on it, at a fair price, which would hopefully also benefit someone here in the process.

If I cannot do so I will hang on to it and, when I have time, enjoy diagnosing and fixing whatever was wrong with it which, as others have suggested, may in fact not be much (possible leaking water pump seal).

I think what we are trying to do is keep you from selling a $2000 engine for $200 or vice versa. That would be a very nice engine for someone if the block is not compromised.
