    considering an early model replacement

So I am considering an early model A4 to replace my late model A4. I've read the book as to the differences between the engines - distributor, starter, etc. I'm going to check it out tomorrow. The one I am considering was from a sailboat that was converted to diesel after the guy got a new freebie Yanmar. It is a whole engine, not just the block. The only thing missing is the fuel pump. So before I go look at it, I have some questions:

    1. Can I just drop this one in? It looks like the shaft coupling has four bolts and mine has three? Is that easy to overcome?

    2. Can I use my current fuel pump? My old one is bolted to the block, but I don't see that same possibility in the pictures of the early model one - I guess I can just bolt it to the bulkhead, right?

    2. The new one has compression of about 90 in all the cylinders - this is good, right? Or good enough, right?

(I will not describe the trouble I have had with my late model, which has now reseized due to, I think, a bad manifold.)

4 bolt coupling was usually a gear reduction A4
as the direct drive is 3 bolt.
    Either way you can adapt.
    Fuel pump should bolt up.
Tyring to keep the Bay's Wooden Boat's history from dying off completely.

      1. As Ball Racing notes the early may have the 2 to 1 reduction gear. This will make the engine several inches longer than a direct drive. Does it look like this?

I believe you could remove the 2 to 1 and attach your direct drive and the engine should fit. It may be easier to remove the gear and the reversing unit together as described in the online parts area. Otherwise you may have to shorten the shaft to use the 2 to 1.
      2. I assume you have a electric fuel pump. If so and it is on the block it is probable using the bracket that MMI sales for this purpose and the whole assembly can transfer to the early. Pics here. http://www.moyermarine.com/cgi-bin/s...rebuilder.html
If it is a mechanical pump it will also transfer.
      3. Yes good enough.

Thank you, Ball Racing and Marian Claire!

I do have an electric fuel pump now, and the bracket, so that's a relief.

I don't know what you mean by "as described in the online parts area." I just read the Transmission section and don't see anything about swapping transmissions.

What I was referring to was the discussion about the last item found here. http://www.moyermarine.com/cgi-bin/s...rebuilder.html
Hope that helps. Dan S/V Marian Claire

Thanks, Dan. There is no way I'm shortening the shaft. I'm trying to get a working motor in this thing as fast as possible. But I think I see what you mean, now. It'll make more sense when I see the engine tomorrow!
