I posted this question on the Catalina 30 Yahoo board as well but I thought I might try here as well, you guys seem to have a little more tech know-how...
I pulled the shaft today to start replacing the cutless bearing and
discovered that the PO had done a quikie "repair" to the stuffing box.
There are no threads whatsoever on the inside end of the bronze tube
that is fabbed into the hull.
In fact you can see that the fitting at one time did have some
rotational rub damage done to it when the threaded segment broke off.
This was impossible to see because the way it was repaired was with a
section of exhaust hose and band clamps.
I'm surprized the surveyor never questioned it but I'm not at all
surprized the sleezebag owner never said anything about it.
I'll be looking at my legal options on Monday.
Although this setup never leaked, I now consider it a real safety risk
which must be properly fixed. In the meantime, has anybody here had to
replace the stuffing box?
Just how much cutting/glassing /alignment etc. must be done?
