Okay... I don't feel like a complete idiot, but yes, the pump had lost prime. Probably as a result of a) opening the rw intake after closing the T-valve; and b) opening up (and draining - duh) my Groco strainer to clean the basket -- both after winterizing.
Re-primed, but got much less water flow than I should, so investigated further. I hadn't changed the cam shoe in probably four years and upon investigation found it to be roughly 3/32" thick -- almost half of what my spare measured. Swapped it out and the pump sucks like a wet vac (okay, not really...) -- without re-priming, btw.
Thanks for the suggestions and glad it turned out to be a simple fix. There's a lesson in there.
