Thinking of removing the aft housing to clean and paint better. Really difficult to get in behind the oil pump and pulley. Anything special I need to know about that removal? Hard to do?
Thanks,
Marty
If you are not taking off anything else and it' still in the boat, then yes, it will be difficult.
It is easier to put back on when you are fixing the whole engine and it is on the bench. It is tricky to keep the gasket from folding up while sliding the case in with the pan still on the engine. Also it takes a few tries to get the pilot shaft in the bearing and that grinds up the gasket!
I personally would not do it unless the gasket is really leaking bad. I would just touch up the paint without messing with all the problems of removal.
I haven't done this since I rebuilt mine in '09, so I cant remember it all for sure. But , I think the MMI manual has a good step-by-step of how it should be done in a complete overhaul.
good luck,
Russ
