Good day at the salvage yard

    Look what I found today!

Posting here because there is another A4 there he'd probably sell for $400. It's complete, with aftermarket parts, but came out of a Hurricane Sandy boat that is obviously no longer attached.

I am in no way affiliated with the business - just FYI.

    Here's the one I didn't buy....

I did, however, include the water lift muffler in my purchase. And the original standpipe exhaust.

great find. That looks more like a water jacketed exhaust.

I'll take another picture with proper orientation, but it's what I would call a standpipe. I don't think I'll be able to use it, and I'll put it here if I can't.

Water jacketed hot section, then standpipe muffler, no question. Nice system.

That IS an interesting setup. As I interpret it, there's still an unjacketed hot section about six inches in length near the bottom hose clamp.

Why don't they just put the exhaust drain outlet at the top of the water jacket so the whole column is cooled?

If I understand your question, and this copper sculpture in my truck....

The jacket keeps the exterior of the pipe cool while it goes around cabinetry, but does very little to cool the actual exhaust gasses.

The top section does the water injection on top of what is probably an intermediate top hat over the inner exhaust pipe. There's a diagram of this somewhere.

The injection of water over the turbulent exhaust gas probably provides the mixing/misting required to safely use the rubber wet exhaust hose. The mixing wouldn't happen if water just poured out sideways, and the top of the riser would be much hotter without the injection.

                  Here ya go . . .

The concern for use in sea water is inside the water jacket the the salt water could reach temperatures where salt crystals would precipitate out of the water and eventually clog things up. This is a common problem with cast mixing elbows. They look like geodes inside.

Nice score. Are you going to part it out or rebuild it?

I think I remember the Marine Manifold place. They made manifolds for car engine conversions. Car engine conversions were popular. I wonder if anyone does it anymore.

I posted here originally because there is a second engine there that looks to be in good shape.

I'm planning on using it as a rebuild, as my original block seems much worse - I do not think I'll ever get the water jacket clear.

I'll probably end up offering the standpipe to the forum, as I think it's too tall for my space... Still to be determined.
