    Cradle dimensions??

I might be buying an Atomic Four on Saturday. I have not seen the engine yet, but want to be prepared.

Can anyone tell me of the dimensions I would want to build a cradle for engine transport in a pick up?

    thanks

I have moved a atomic 4 in the trunk of my Camry. All i needed was a couple
of blocks to hold it from rolling I first put a piece of plywood down underneath
to distribute the load and then tied it the engine in place. Worked just fine.

Believe it or not, the young guy at the boatyard I got it from lifted it in
    by himself!!.

    Best Regards Art

Like Art says, nothing fancy. Engine will sit quite happily on the oil pan. Perhaps a piece of ply sized to fit the truck and some cleats you can screw down to keep it from sliding. Also take some rachet straps to keep it from rolling around & sliding fore/aft. Once you get it home, build a nice cradle with wheels for moving it around.
      Enjoy..

From what I see so far.

There is 5 3/8 " from the engine mounts to the oil pan bottom. So I dont know if a 2 X 6 will work to keep it off the pan.

Also it looks like 11 1/2 " between the mounts athwart ship.

        maybe 2 2X6s 2 feet long, mounted 11 1/2 " apart will work.

Thanks guys. Good to know it will sit on pan though. I had a 6 cylinder ford sliding around a pick up bed for a couple weeks once.

Your 2x side rails idea is not bad, but you will need a couple of smaller cross pieces to keep them upright. You will also need to take a notch out of the 2x stringer on the port side to accomodate the oil drain port. I can get exact measurements and a picture tonight if you would like.

You might be better off to take two 4x4's and nail a couple of 2x blocks on top where the engine mounting holes are. You can adjust it to fit exactly when you load the motor. Lag screw the motor to the blocks and you will be able to slide the motor around on your rails without scratching up the oil pan. When you get home, lift your motor and the 4x4's on to a couple of cross pieces (make them nice and wide) with casters and you will have a nice little cradle to move the motor around your workshop. That is what I use and I really like it.

Thanks! Needless to say it didn't look that good when I got it.

The paint job on this motor is better than the late model I run in my catalina 27. However, access to the motor in the C27 is so bad that I am waiting for a reason to pull the engine into the cabin to paint it up. The darn thing is so reliable that the reason just never seems to come!
