A few of us were trying out different features available on the Moyer Community Forum and a question arose over what, if any, benefits there were to formally "befriending" a listmate.
We learned there are 4 tiers of privacy to our profile information and we can control who sees what. This is done in the profile privacy tab of the user control panel. Each level is more exclusive. The 4 tiers are:
Everyone - anyone on the internet who stumbles onto the Moyer site.
Registered members - self explanatory.
Contacts - a personal list of registered members that we can control (the list, not the members).
Friends - a more exclusive personal list of members.
A friend is automatically a contact but not the other way around.
By default, the privacy setting controlling access to our profile information is 'everyone.' Different aspects of our profile can be allowed different access tiers. As an example, I'm fine tuning mine to restrict visitor messages to 'registered members' which will automatically include 'contacts' and 'friends'. I feel the internet riff-raff doesn't need to know what we discuss amongst ourselves. My photo albums will remain set to 'everyone' so I can invite non-listmates to see the pictures, and so on.
