If you have only the inline polishing filter, you probably want to install a Racor unit in the line ahead of the fuel pump.

Adding to your burden of going over the carb, time may have pitted the points, changed their gap and worsened the timmng of the spark to the plugs. Have you oiled the timing advance weights, lately? All can be found in the distributer.
