    a funny day with a 15 HP

    Today was funny.

Dad bought one of those 1 pound fancy lithium power supplies. The kind that comes with mini jumper cables, that can start most cars. Also has USB, and cigarette lighter. He just wanted to run a fan in his van, and not run down the battery.

He wanted to try out the jumper capability of this little magic box. He has a new Nissan van and did not want to experiment with that. I offered my Ford Ranger.

He was looking at the old out board sitting on the old aluminum boat in the back yard. He was wondering if this 1975 Johnson 15 HP was worth something. It has been sitting there since before Charley. Charley is the way will tell time here in SW Florida. It was a small hurricane that blew threw town. Almost blew away town, back in 04.

Getting back to the power pack. The engine has electric start, or so it appears. He wanted to try to use the power pack to try to start the engine. I just laughed and told him that I never tried to start the engine since I bought it in 2002.

He kept mentioning it, so I gave in. I got out the wd 40 and loosened the motor cap. (the one thing I did was to oil it up, so it spins freely) I got an oil squirt can and filled it with half oil and half gas. I removed the plugs and the carb cover. I squirted the cylinders and shot plenty down the carb. I hooked up the power pack to the battery cables, and hit the button........

    Nothing.... oh well

wait, there is more. I reconnected it , and tried again. The engine zoomed to life. I was laughing so hard I was crying!!! I kept squirting oil and it kept running. Amazing, buy OMC!!!!

I figured it would need a new impeller, so why not. I ran it as long as I dare, and shut it off. I tried to crank it, just to check the power pack. It just kept starting. So funny.

For sale, 1975 15 hp johnson, electric start, runs, starts well.

Last fall I picked up a 4hp Suzuki; tank on top with additional tank for zodiac. My neighbor across the street son works at motorcycle shop and they are the suzuki marine dealer as well. This is an older engine, long shaft, they fixed it up for a guy and then he traded it...so I bought it. Older 2 strokes, hard to kill'em.

I had one of those electric start 15HP OMC's on my E-27. It never failed to start and run! It did let me down once getting out of a lee-shore situation when the seas were big and steep, the bow went high enough the entire motor submerged and hydrolocked to a dead stop. I managed to get out of the bay safely and once I found shelter it took about 20 minutes to drain the crankcase and get it lit again, yes with motor crack. I used that motor for 8 years, until I bought Volador.

I have a 15 HP Evinrude on my dinghy. It has been a great engine and the dinghy can tow a tube at 20 knots or so
Hey - if that engine is a long shaft and wasn't 1,000 miles away I might buy it.

Doesn't surprise me a bit. For budget power (and fun) I have run a fleet of OMC outboards over the years.

My primary dinghy motor is a 1957 E-rude fisherman. We use that one because it is so easy to start. And so reliable.

My Tinny has a '77 18 Hp e-rude which makes it the newest motor in the fleet. It is replacing the 1956 10 HP Johnson which is a beautiful maroon color (but lacks the extra 8 ponies).

I sold a beautiful bronze(maroon) '58 35 Jonson to a friend a few years back. He said it will be in a reality show this summer.

Those old Suzukis are great simple machines. Problem is, they are hard to get parts for. Parts for old OMC stuff can be had a plenty. Even Napa Auto has a few gaskets.
