Converting Mando 55 alt to ext. regulator

I have a Mando 55 alternator, practically brand new, for use as a spare in case my old Motorola gives up the ghost.

My Motorola is externally regulated by a Xantex (sp?) regulator which I got from West Marine a few years ago and which seems to give my batteries a much better charge.

How can I (if it's possible) convert my Mando alternator to use an external regulator? The internal regulator seems to put out 14.5 volts, which has me concerned when I am motoring for an extended period.

You'll probably be able to find a local automotive alternator shop that can modify your Mando to require an external regulator (which must have been done to your Motorola); however the manufacturer discourages this practice.

While 14.5 volts is technically a smidgen over the 14.2 specification currently in use for internally regulated alternators, I don't think it will cause you any problems, even in the event that you happen to be using gel batteries.

I know there are a few electrical engineers checking our Forum; perhaps they'll weigh in on the subject.
