    A new newbie, Ontario

    Hi everyone
I bought a 1969 Hughes 29 a year and a half ago. Having never sailed anything bigger than a canoe before. I feel i have the knack for it and i like my boat a little more each time i see her.As you may know, these boats came with an Atomic 4 and i would like to get to know this engine as i am getting to know the rest of the boat. So i have a question and it may sound stupid, but could some one please tell me where i can find the oil screen on this motor, I've never seen an engine without an actual filter. Help if you can please and thank you in advance

    Furface, Welcome aboard.

You won't see it unless the engine is apart.

It is in the base of the engine inside....Change your oil frequently and don't worry about it. Some people put oil filters on the engine ... some don't. My advice at this point is to buy the MMI repair manual and keep it close.

These engines do very well with a bit of maintenance. Learn how to keep it running, how to troubleshoot it and above all preventive maintenance. In Ontario, use real car antifreeze in the winter to winterize the engine once you pull the boat from the water.

That was the quick version. If you get in the habit of reading this forum a couple of times a week you will pick up so much information and it will all start to make sense.

More to come as you need it...all the best.

    All the best.

      Welcome Furface:
You will find no finer site than this one for the A4. It certainly has kept me going and being less poor. You'll enjoy the sport of sailing and all that goes with it if you'll invest in a lesson or two. Plus you'll be a lot safer for you and your crew.

        Welcome Furface

The A4 is also used as a tractor engine as well and as such was not designed with an oil filter. As Mo (Maurice) suggested frequent oil changes keep up with the buildup of nastiness in the engine oil. Oil changes are recommended every 100 hours or even less
Oil is cheap. Repairs are expensive. Old engines like clean oil. Get yourself a decent oil change kit if you don't have one already. I usually do fall and spring oil changes but tend not to use the engine as much as I should.
Oil should be checked every start up and should be clear and not dark.

The A4 manual will help you learn more about your A4 engine. Highly recommended.

Where in Ontario? We live in Michigan but keep our boat in Little Current and sail the North Channel and Georgian Bay.
