Water Leaking from Exhaust Pipe

Hello,

I am currently out cruising around Catalina. I noticed a significant amount of dripping water coming from the exhaust pipe. It is coming where the joint fitting meets the exhaust pipe. Its hard to tell exactly because the cloth wrapping is covering up the leak. Any ideas what's going on here? When we sail back into our anchorage I am planning on first unwrapping the cloth and seeing if the joint of the exhaust pipe and fitting may be loose. See video and photos for reference. Thanks!

What you have is a hole in the exhaust after the water injection. If your bilge pump will keep up, the cabin is open and the engine box too it should be alright to run until the cruise is over. Exhaustr fumes will be exiting with the water.

[B]DO NOT UNWRAP UNTIL YOU ARE IN THE SLIP AND READY TO FIX>[B]
Don't mess with it as you may just break it off. Just be careful and you should be able to cruise while monitoring the leak.

It is not a loose fitting as they rust "stuck" after a few cycles from NEW!!

I went through that a couple years ago. Numerous threads around that.
Do not touch it, do not apply any force to it if you can handle the leakage and be careful with exhaust fumes.

Ok, thank you all for the useful information. I have an all downwind passage back to Dana Point where I am going to get a guest slip till i can fix it. So hopefully we wont need the engine much. Any ideas from your experience where I should be able to find a replacement pipe and wrapping? Is it best to order from moyer marine for an exact replacement? Also any recommendations on stuff i shpuld also replace in my exhaust system while im doing the job. Im learning as I go with engine repair and Ill be attempting to do this repair on my own, any words of wisdom is appreciated.

looking at your video, it seems that you may be able to use Moyer Marine Catalina 27 exhaust in your boat, head room should be OK (to be verified of course). I got mine from them. Let's see with others who have the same boat as you. But black threaded pipe from Home Depot would make the trick if you have some time to spend on it

I recommend duplicating what you have in either 1¼" black iron pipe (NO GALVANIZED !!) sourced from either Home Depot or maybe Ferguson's or 1¼" 316 stainless steel sourced from McMaster-Carr Industrial Supply.

I redid our 1977 Pearson 323's exhaust in stainless from McMaster-Carr about 9 years ago, and it's worked flawlessly since then.

Thread sealant?

Hey all,

Im finishing up the replacement of my exhaust loop and i have two questions.
1. The connection from my exhaust manifold fitting (threaded to the exhaust pipe) to the studs on my exhaust manifold. Should this metal to metal connection have sealant or pipe dope? Obviously i dont want exhaust seeping through this connection.

2. The connection at the (end) of the exhaust loop where my water injection fitting meets the black hose that leads to my exhaust muffler. I reused the original black hose so the end of the hose is a bit bent from removing it. It goes on to the injection fitting fairly easy, and i have to really tighten it down with two hose clamps to get a tight fit. Should i be putting pipe dope or sealant in this connection to ensure an air tight fit? See pictures for reference on 1. And 2.

Also to note all those extra hose clamps on my fiberglass wrap are temporary to hold the wrap in place until the exhaust heats up and molds the wrap in place.

1.There is a gasket between the flange and the manifold. Guess there wasn't one when you disassembled? You might be able to source a gasket at an auto parts store if you take the flange with you. Sometimes the young squirts can find what you need by going through their stock. I'm sure MMI has one.

2. A bit of pipe dope would ensure a air tight fit and make it easier to remove the hose next time.

Suggestion? By the way this thread has been amazingly helpful as I consider the work ahead. Discovered leak at pipe/flange junction around threads and above Moyer water injection point on bottom side of lifter. Thank you. Stay well. Tim
