    More Standpipe

I didn't want to possibly hijack the other thread going on about standpipes; noticed a comment in the thread talking about making sure the standpipe is well supported to take the load off the exhaust pipe coming from the manifold. Seems like a perfectly reasonable idea...

Brings me to my question - anyone out there with an Alberg have a standpipe with a bracket? I have two standpipes and neither have brackets to take weight off the piping. They've worked for decades without is seams (but I don't know if any repairs were ever done for that), but now I would like to make sure not leading to problems. Should one be added?

Check out the MMI standpipe in the online catalog. It has a band clamp for support. Also, the vintage Newport 30 was A4 powered with a standpipe exhaust. It had a horizontal bracket welded to the canister that bolted to the cockpit seat riser for support.

You can easily fashion a very nice support for any standpipe with Unistrut and matching clamps available at any electrical wholesaler (steel) and McMaster-Carr (steel and stainless). Note that if the clamping system is of a different metal than the standpipe all contact points should be insulated to prevent dissimilar metals corrosion.

I wasn't quite sure about mounting the standpipe bracket tight to a bulkhead, while the engine was free to vibrate on its mounts. (The PO had disconnected the old bracket and wedged the standpipe in place with a rubber swim fin...)
In the end, I attached the bracket with a couple of rubber "equipment feet" under the washers. Seems OK, but I did not test it the other way.
