My engine runs great and starts often on the first hit of the starter button. It has about 300 hours since a major overhaul by Moyer, and I am very pleased with it. Last season, near the end of the season, I noticed a "tappet" sound that seems to come and go, and noticed it again yesterday. I'm not sure that it is a tappet that I'm hearing, but the engine sort of sounds like a "sewing machine". I checked the oil, and it's up to snuff, and oil pressure about 40 psi upon start-up. Any ideas of what the sound might be, or how to silence it?

where is the noise eminating from? Any speciic location? Alternator? Front end? Gear box, etc.
As for silencing it, raise the sails? LOL Just kidding.

If it's valve tappets you need to remove the manifold and plate underneath and check/ adjust the vales. This will take a little time s I'd say devote a whole afternoon to the project. Be sure to have a new gasket. The hand crank from Moyer Marine will save an incredible anmount of timeComment

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to find out where the noise is coming from-any ideas on isolating the sound?
If it turns out to be the valve lifters, is there any harm to leave them as they are? I'm not very comfortable with the idea of popping off the manifold and trying to adjust the valves.Comment

Noise location technique
A stethescope is of first choice, otherwise a small diamtere rubber hose (1/4"?) is a poor man's alternative. Also, using your fingers on various sections of the engine helps too. Might be able to find a relatively cheap stethescope online like eBay or at your Dr's office..I'm sure they have a few laying around or sweet talk a nurse?
