oil pressure question

My oil pressure starts lower (20psi) and increases to near 40psi after it warms up. From what I have read, most engines will start with higher oil pressure when cold, and then decrease as the engine warms. Should I be concerned with this?

First check oil and see if there is any noticeable difference in appearance...ie water or something like that.

I'd be suspicious of a relief valve sticking or something along those lines. If you rev the engine you should see the oil pressure rise a bit also...not drop off. That is a pretty good indicator of bearing condition.

Definitely something going on there but I'd be thinking in the gauge itself. I haven't had to haul one apart yet but there are a few on here that have dealt with the oil pressure gauges in the past few weeks.

First, a big Welcome to the forum!

Your oil pressure readings are actually right in the normal range.
They are, in fact, exactly how my A4 behaves.
Assume when it reaches 40, it stays solidly there?

Mo, did you possibly mis-read his post? (How many beers this morning?)

Bill, welcome.

Mine does that too..it was REALLY low (5-6 PSI) when I first started it up..maybe for 10-15 minutes..after that it would slowly climb and after 35-40 minutes maybe 35PSI & stabilized there at cruise RPM..it would drop to about 20 at idle when warm.

I installed the Indigo oil filter kit (with pressure regulator) which seems to have helped..I had the troublesome late model ball/spring regulator thingie before, which is replaced when installing the Indigo kit. Now I am above 20 PSI right away.

Bill

What weight of oil and additives are you using?

My A4 has the same oil pressure readings. This is considered normal operaton. Ditto what Roadnsky said.

Thanks guys for the info. I am using straight 30 weight oil. (Castol heavy duty). The only additive would be alittle Marvel Mystery Oil from winter storage. The oil itself looks very good, and the engine doesn't use it. I did make an adjustment to the oil pressure (she had been slightly shy of 40psi when fully warmed up. We were out yesterday, and the oil pressure ended up at 40, right on the money. BTW, I have never had oil pressure decrease with an increase in throttle - I guess that is a good thing. Happy sailing.
