Fuel pump was the problem!

I recently posted a problem with a 20 minute shutdown of the engine (you could set your watch by it!). After replacing the coil (not the problem) and checking all possible electrical in the system, we determined that it was the fuel pump (and it was and has now run beyond 45 minutes) At the time, I also had the starter rebuilt as it was giving problems. I am still having a problem starting. I get a click, click, then the switch is thrown on the panel in the cockpit. Sometimes there is nothing and other times it starts just fine. I can shut it down and start it up right away (sometines). My best guess is that I need to replace the push button switch in the pedestal or could there be a bad connection at the solenoid? Or both? One fix seems to lead to another!

Mike

It is the nature of the A4...one fix leads to another. Better in port than at sea. Listen to the engine...it will tell you what it needs.

When you say you had the starter "rebuilt," what do you mean? What, exactly, was done to it?

Sounds like possibly a bad solenoid or maybe a bad ground, preventing a good current flow.

Bill T. +1:

Did the rebuild include something done to the nose cone?

I noticed my solenoid gave me a few futile clicks, during the first day or so after I brought the A4 back to life after a long lay up. Didn't look at it, but wouldn't be surprised if the contacts in the solenoid were just dirty. It hasn't happened again.

I've replaced those contacts in my 400K mile toyota twice. 79 cents in parts, about six hours to wrestle the thing out and back into the toy.
