Bronze, but could not get it in Canada so went with Duplicolor Chevy Orange-red.

However, since it is technically a touch up paint, it is not extremely heat tolerant. I have a gray Rustoleum high heat primer underneath that seems to be holding up well..When all the orange burns off I'll have to try something else!

Now if I could just get the rest of the boat cleaned up like the engine!

I think I'll paint mine Universal "Diesel" gold and tell the guys at the dock that I've figured out a way to make them run quiet and not smell and just hope that they don't notice the plug wires...

Interesting observation, Shawn. When I was trying to figure out how to paint our engine in the boat, I ended up thinking that it would be pointless to use a primer, because I couldn't see what a primer would do on an engine that could not be properly bathed and cleaned -- but I could well be wrong there (my research was all by google, and I have no expertise in engine paint). Also, I got the impression that Duplicolor paints were acceptable as primary engine paints, not just for touchup. I put on two coats by spraying within the paint's window. I don't have a lot of hours on the engine, but into the second season it still looks fine. I seem to recall they recommend baking the paint on at about 300 degrees. I tried that with one part that I had off the engine, but the rest I had to leave for natural baking when the engine warmed.

I have exactly same as Neil.
Lovely color but the paint is not durable for engines. I say get paint that is specifically for engines.

I gotta say, so far I've been pretty happy with my home depot paint job. The picture in my earlier post was taken 2 years after painting without any touch up.

If I ever have the need to take the engine out I'll be more serious about the paint but until then, . . .

Wow. I cant really tell by the picture, it may be an optical illusion, but your muffler configuration seem to go against everything I have read. Most reads put the water lift at least 12 inches below the manifold. Yours looks at about 4 inches. Is it a mirage? How does it work and what kind of muffler is that?

Butch, that is a Vetus Aqua Lift. It is not original but has been in there for over 20 years according to the P.O. It is definitely not 12" below the manifold, but it is probably 6". I can't really get it any lower, the engine is already in the lowest spot in the boat!

With Jerry's pristine engine room that you could do surgery in, I am thinking I should have cropped out all that other stuff so you guys couldn't see how dirty the rest of my boat is..

The same problem that I am facing......the engine is the lowest thing on the boat. Ha ha ha, dont worry about the mess. Believe me, I got you beat 100 to 1 on the dirtiness. I have intentionally avoided the cabin sole/engine compartment till now. But now I have to deal with it. I will take some photos and maybe even a video later today for you guys. I wont be able to hear the laughter so I will be ok with it. LOL

Last winter (when I had the boat hauled for 6 months) I replaced all of the hose (original from 1977) on the other side of the muffler all the way back to the transom. The riser in the exhaust is in the cockpit locker as high as I can get it..I had two 10' sections of exhaust hose, so it ended up just under the hull/deck joint with a 45 degree fiberglass elbow.

This is engine paint is sold by the local ship chandler. I really like the color but it has not held up well over the past three years. The base coat is a Rustoleum primer.

Correction: Looked great!

No need for the flywheel cover- like the gentleman running a desalinator with his A4, I just put some fan blades on there and let the wind fill the sails. No need for your fancy pants propeller with this set-up!

Kelly - Your companionway looks a lot like mine except what's on the back side of that breaker panel? On my boat that is a slide in section of the hatch. I love the color of that engine. Regards, Hanley

Hanley- The area you are talking about is not original on my boat. It used to be storage with two small sliding panels (with anchor motif) closing it off. The sliding tracks (wood) are still there and I still have the panels. Now, behind the breaker panel there is electrical spaghetti and the backs of my cockpit gages and depth sounder. These are indicated in the photo with the blue box...

My engine is the traditional bronze color but I do prefer white. I did paint the engine compartment in my C&C 30 white to reflect light for better viewing.

Oil leaks etc are much easier to detect, spray some engine cleaner on it once in a while to keep it looking clean.

I saw one engine that was white and was quite impressed.
