    Unknown Exchanger

This exchanger was part of the plunder at Oriental (the PT26 repower episode). Does anyone know what it is supposed to fit or who is the manufacturer? I am considering replacing my multiple exchangers with just this one.

Never did figure out what this exchanger came from - it was part of the plunder from the raid on Oriental last year. Now it's going into Destiny; 3/4" on the salt water side, 5/8" on the antifreeze side. The thing weighed 33 lbs empty. It will be mounted below the water line on a plywood skid bolted to a clamp across 2 frames.

That's no light duty piece of kit there Hanley. I wonder if it would have been out of something like a Cat Generator or something along those lines.

Yeah, it has "diesel" written all over it. It has some internal damage - dividers slightly corroded on the end plates (it's a dual pass) but I think I've got them fixed with JB Weld; soon to find out. Someone made the mistake of running the salt water on the wrong side of the unit. If an exchanger has cast iron mixed with copper or brass, the antifreeze should contact the cast iron, not the salt water. But the thing is massive so even with a (possible) loss of effciency it should enable me to get higher rpms holding 170 degrees and even switch some more exchanger capacity to oil cooling.

This illustrates the consequences of running salt water into the wrong side of an exchanger. The body of the exchanger is brass but the ends are cast iron. The end shown is both input and output. I will run the antifreeze thru the mixed metals portion. The JB Weld repair shown looks precarious but seems to be tight and I'm sure it can resist antifreeze. Now the remaining repairs will be done preceded by a thorough scrubbing/etching with muriatic acid.

I'm beginning to see a little of how the dentist works.

That's a pretty good job Hanley. That should work fine.

                  Winter Fun

Ran the A4 in the garage today with new (to me) monster exchanger on line. With bypass open could not get above 160. With bypass closed could not get above 125 (no thermostat for me). 1000 to 1200 rpm electrical loads only. Voltage at alt +: 14.6
                  main buss bar 14.34
coil + 10.0 - coil cold to touch after 1 hr.
                  Life is good.
