riser smoking
Hello folks. Been a long time.
I built a new exhaust riser, wrapped it in insulation tape. I have a couple of hours on the engine. My smoke alarm went off - FIRE. Not CO warning. I visually inspected, and saw thin smoke coming off it. Is it possible that the black pipe has some kind of paint or varnish that is burning off? It is definitely not carbon monoxide setting off the alarm. I installed a new alarm to check. thanks you. Chris |

Normal
Yes, the black pipe will emit a bit of oil fumes, hand prints and anything the wrap absorbed which is normal for at least a few hours. A couple more cycles of hot to cold and it should begin to fade to nothing.

I usually run the engine hard for a couple hours with all the hatches open to burn all the crap off a new riser.
If you have the misfortune to use galvanized pipe it might take longer and those fumes will give you a pounding headache or worse. There is actually a name for it, something like "metal fever". |

Thank you!
That's a relief. I was about to pull it off and rebuild. I do not recall past risers to smoke this much. I also used high temp paint on the flange - my neighbor has a steel fabrication shop and he removed it from the old and cleaned it up. since it was raw, I painted it. |

I once purchased some exhaust wrap online (low price) that gave off horrible fumes for a long time. I finally changed it out for a high quality wrap and the issue went away.
Not all exhaust wraps are created equally it seems. Peter |
