We're back!!! We found out the Moyer doesn't do machine work anymore. We have an old friend who is going to come over and measure the block and has an incredible machine shop. He is very skilled. Can anybody tell me, ahead of his arrival, how a block is machined? What do we need to ask from him? Is this something that he should be able to do with me? Or are we crazy of thinking of asking him to do this...? We are convinced it will need to be bored because we can see the wear inside the cylinders before we have even measured it. And does anyone know where you can buy the sleeves?

Ebben and Jay - Glad to see you back! Just a reminder, that engine was running fine when taken out of the boat. The only problem was that it burned a little oil. Of course you should have your friend examine it but I would not assume that you need either pistons or boring. I do think that you should plan on a new set of rings and a valve job including new guides. You may find the bearings are still within specs but you will probably replace them anyway. Welcome back. Whew! that's a big question for one post.

Your friend will be the one to answer many of these questions. It seems he has taken an interest already. You're lucky.

Many different types of machining operations are used to recondition an engine. You may not need all of them. A machinist is the one to make that judgement. Many times an engine cylinder bore will look worn but still be in serviceable spec. The top of the bore, where the piston rings stop on their stroke travel, is where you will see the most wear. You can feel this spot with your fingertips. Again this may not be worn out. My own block was worn a bit here and I honed the cylinder walls with a fine grade hone and just put in new rings.

Sleeves are for when the cylinder has so much damage that it can't be bored to fit oversized pistons. This is way to save rare or valuable engine blocks.

Anyway, ask lots of questions to your friend and offer to help him too, even if it's just mowing his lawn. There are no wrong questions here, I bet he would like your curiosity. I hope you can watch any operation he might do for you. You'll like the machine shop, ask for a tour.

I heard that Kompier was a top-of-the-line shipyard in Holland.

Maverick is a ketch, so two masts, and is from 1981. She was designed by a man named Herman Tingen...

that's just about all I know without digging way into the paperwork!

We finally got the block back, and parts came, and we put the crankshaft, oil pump, rings, and pistons in today!

It runs! After months of putting it back together (on and off) it is finally running.. not well... but it still runs!
