so I will have closed cooling system, yet I will still use salt water for the exhaust?

Yes....this way you replace the $300 heat exchanger every 15-20 years instead of a $1,500 block/engine/manifold/head, and you won't have to worry about saltwater corroding the block anymore.

I am terrible at diagrams, so I'll try this instead:

antifreeze side = water pump-->block-->manifold-->one half of HX-->back to pump

raw water side = 2nd water pump-->other half of HX-->out thru the exhaust.

In your picture in this thread, the hose that comes out of the manifold and goes into the exhaust would get re-routed...the manifold would head to the HX, and another hose with raw hot water from the HX would go into the exhaust pipe...

I bet Neil has a diagram of his FWC system. I just print out all his stuff, and put it in my own boat files..

edit - yup..here ya go 2dogs - this is Neil's diagram..the grey loop is antifreeze, the pink is saltwater - he also has a water heater in his loop too..

The way FWC works is that instead of having the raw seawater circulating through your block to cool it off, you have a water-to-water heat exchanger. Engine coolant circulates through the block and through the heat exchanger. Raw seawater circulates through the heat exchanger to cool off the engine coolant, which then cools off the engine. The raw seawater still goes into your exhaust at the exact same point it does right now. It's just that instead of having flowed through the engine itself, the seawater flowed through the heat exchanger. If the heat exchanger eventually rots out or gets full of crud, it's much less expensive to replace than your engine.
