Leaking Water Pump - Repair/Replace ?
Folks, I just noticed my water pump has a drip from the weep hole area. My pump looks like the Oberdorfer water pump N202M7 on Don’s site My leak looks just like the one a fellow member just videoed and posted of his pump.
I have seen others write that they tried doing the pump rebuild, had troubles, then went and bought a new pump. I understand that some have either marred pump housing removing old seals, or put in seals backwards. I am thinking of either getting the $160 pump rebuild kit that includes new seals, shaft, gaskets, etc, or getting the new $265 pump. I would just hate to have to by both. I have not removed or disassembled my pump yet. I do have Don’s book, and his video on cooling systems. I will review these again now. I would like to ask if anyone could give me some tips on what to look for on the pump to make the decision on whether to rebuild or replace. Any tips or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Russ 1978 Catalina 30 |

what will a rebuild hurt, if you get it right!!??
Russ,
I have a '77 C-30 and I was able to rebuild my pump (new seals & impeller) without any noticeable damage, although I will admit it was difficult to remove the inner seal with beating up the pump housing. I shoved my outer seal in just a little bit too far, but Don says the weep holes are generous and I would be OK. I actually had a leak from the threads of the grease cup after about 10 hours of motoring. I tightened it up with a wrench and stopped the leak. The rest of the pump seems to be performing admirably. I have a spare impeller (& housing gaskets) in my parts bin in the event of that type of failure, but no seals as I think you need the pump on a bench with a vise to do the seals..not something I'd attempt in the field, or at a foreign marina dock while my friends are having cocktails on their 2 year old boat with 50 hours on the diesel, etc..

The seals are not that hard to get out as long as you have a flathead screwdriver with a tip that's been bent 90 degrees to persuade them down the channel they're stuffed into. I've done it onboard.
I don't own these tools but I think they'd help and have suggested that Don sell better versions online: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=5469 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=93958 |

tenders..I have the small set of picks in your second link..invaluable.
I do seem to recall sacrificing a screwdriver to the cause, as I found it in the bottom of the boat tool box recently. I heated it up and bent the tip around to give me something to pry out the seals..
