Removing Raw Water Pump

I need to remove the raw water pump on our circa 1973 A4, rebuilt in'96. Looks like the Oberdorfer N202 pump with the grease cup and inspecting the mounting bolts, sure enough the lower one is rusted bad (no hex feature remaining). Looking for advice on how to attack the rusted bolt, my initial thought is to try to use a chisel to loosen it, but may have to chisel the head off. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

This Might Help. Then Again It Might Not.

Pull the shaft and impeller out. Then if you can get one bolt out swing the pump on the other bolt sort of back and forth. This might give you a little more room to work on the corroded bolt. It might also loosen the remaining bolt just a bit.
Good Luck.

TRUE GRIT

Edit: Put the cover plate back on after you don't ding up the pump while you work on it.

Several years ago I used the method you describbed to remove a completely rounded off lower waterpump bolt. I began with a cold chisel and created a divot at about the one o'clock position. I then changed to a drift and basically just tapped away for about 15 minutes until I was able to coax a little rotation out of that bolt. The threads going into the block are lubricated from the inside so once the rotation starts, it should spin out pretty easily. This would be a good time to switch to the "extendo-bolt"

If you can get a Dremel tool in there, you can cut a slot on the bolt head then use a screwdriver to remove the bolt. Beats the hammer/cold chisel method!

I got mine off with a lot of patience, a short pair of vice grips, and a lot of PB Blaster. But it was awful - took an hour or so hanging over the engine upside down.

+1 on the extendo bolt. It's FM.

I used this to remove 2 bolts on my flywheel cover that had rusted to lumps. May need to pound it on but it does work, in combination with PB blaster.
