Choke knob replacement?

Hi friends.

Our A-4's choke pull knob is chromed brass with an Allen set screw securing it to the wire inside the choke cable. The threads holding the set screw in place have become worn and I need a replacement knob. I WANT THE CHROME PLATED ORIGINAL. I know I can buy a new cable with a nice plastic pull knob right here. I am resisting the urge

If I can find one with your help I will simply buy a chromed brass replacement knob. My other option is to drill and re tap the hole for a larger set screw. It will be a little tricky since I don't have a great selection of tools for such a "gun smithing" sized job. My other, other option is taking it to a gun smith.

Any suggestions as to where an "original" chromed brass choke pull knob can be found?

Thanks,

George

Two suggestions

I thought Perko had those knobs but a search of their catalog turned up nothing.

Suggestion 1: Take a look at motorcycle suppliers, particularly Harley parts.
Suggestion 2: Perhaps a knob from a Cole-Hersee push pull switch?

George, I think your idea of re-threading the existing knob is the way to go, especially if the current set screw is 6-32. Buy one 8-32 tap and one 8-32 set screw and be done! Also, having a full set of taps and dies is probably one of my most used tools around the boat. Anything that goes to the mast or boom is drilled and tapped for me.

A full set of taps and dies is probably an unnecessary luxury - particularly if you want decent quality. In my book, Harbor Freight doesn't make it for taps & dies. OK for chasing existing threads, but shaky for cutting new ones.
I get my taps at my local hardware store as needed. Be sure to also buy the proper size pilot drill - usually a number size rather than fractional. I usually buy two taps at the same time, and grind one off to be a bottoming tap.

I'm in Tom's camp on taps and dies. I have a full set from 4-40 to 1/2-13. Sizes beginning at #10 and larger include fine and coarse threads. I also have a set of pipe taps, 1/8" NPT to 3/4" NPT and as a result of last summer's Yamaha outboard head replacement, M8 tap too, my first metric.

They're used all the time.

Thanks to everyone. I have neglected this post. I still need to solve the problem. I will either re-tap, as Tom suggests, or a gunsmith friend might be able to take care of it for me while he waits for the morning coffee to brew. I will ask. If not, adding another tap to my collection is fine with me.

I have not looked at a possible Harley part but that is a great idea.

My fisherman's, parallel jaw pliers got me through the end of the season. Ha!

I found a few products that may fit your needs:

Dorman 55196 has a chrome knob but it's bigger than your original.

Edelbrock 8013 looks promising.

TRW has one also.

And maybe the most promising of all, RPC R2332.

A virtual Cornucopia of choke cables! An RPC R2332 is on the way. Thank you!
