    External Voltage Regulator

    Ahoy All,
On my early model A4, with a Prestolite 35 Amp alternator, (which i've had tested OK on the bench,) It appears to be the external Volt. reg. not working. Is there a test I can perform with my trusty VOA meter to confirm my suspicions? Which replacement Volt. Reg. should I specify.

Thanks for your input in advance

I've had this happen to me quite a number of times. My alternator
repairer told me I needed to "jump" the alternator and restore
it's magnetic field by taking a wire from the + side of the
electircal circuit and briefly touching it to the right stud on
    the alternator.

I'm not on the boat so perhaps Don can say which stud is
the right one. Memory says it is the lower one which (at least
in my case) doesn't have anything connected to it.

I do this with the motor running and the results are immediate.
I don't know why this happens.

      Jonathan,

I think you may be referring to a late model, single output internally regulated alternator. I don't have any experience with the field excitation requirements of early model Prestolite alternators.

Re: Early A4 external voltage regulator

I have found a replacement for the external volt. reg. on my early model A4 equiped with a Prestolite Alternator. It is manufactured/distributed by "Transpo" and is designated P8 352A 12V356.

        Cheers,
