Off-Topic Discussions

We've just added a new category for off-topic discussions. This area is reserved specifically for discussion among validated members only. If you're validated and logged in, you'll find it just above the classifieds.

We can add new sub-categories as suggested. Proper decorum and good taste are expected and will be required.

Bill

I'm reluctant to discuss too much of the detail of how we keep the riff-raff off this forum. I will say this, though, to answer your question, yes, there is an important difference.

Registered forum members are those individuals who have completed the process of email confirmation of their online registration, but have not yet posted one or more messages appropriate to the forum. Some bad guys do get this far, but ultimately turn out to be proven nefarious by any of several checks I run on all new registrants. The last key check and balance is that a registered member's first few posts are moderated (meaning that I personally review them before they are visible on the forum). If I see anything inappropriate in these first few posts, they're outta' here.

Validated forum members are those individuals who have registered, passed the various checks and posted some number of messages (I'll not specify how many) appropriate to the forum.

Probably too much info. Hope this helps, anyway. We work hard at housekeeping.

If you can see the new category, you're validated and logged in. If you can't, log in (if you haven't) and participate.

Bill

I had no idea. I will say I can really see the fruits of your effort as this is, in my opinion, an incredible forum environment clearly several cuts above all the others.

Nicely done.

Whew! And I always thought I was riff-raff!

Seriously, thanks Bill for working to keep this a wonderful, clean and safe site!
It is appreciated.

(And NO, Neil. I'm not sucking up for spark plugs!!)

Be assured, Jerry, we ARE riff-raff. For some unknown reason Bill tolerates us. Maybe for comic relief.

Ditto..I consider myself riff-raff too..but I do love my Atomic4 & all the help I have received here bringing it back to life.

I was about 6 years old when it was brand new & watched it take me around the Chesapeake from the Sassafras River thru the Dismal Swamp Canal and back. However, I was not in charge of it until about 14 months ago so as an adult, I am excited about giving it a second life with my family.

Bill,

I can't resist the opportunity to add my personal thanks for the wonderful gift your "labor of love" has blossomed into for MMI and the Atomic 4 community. Without your guidance, friendship, and expertise in Information Technology, we would still be spending almost half of our productive hours at MMI stuffing paper newsletters in envelops just to reach 700 people (in a good month).

Sugestion that might be useful

Attention Bill

I was thinking, would it be useful to allow users to view the most recent
post to a thread 1st? This would be helpful as it not only saves time
navigating to the end of the thread and extra pages, but would also
help people from possibly missing the lastest posting, especially when on
a new added page greater than 2 or 3 in length it's easy to miss .

Alternatively, is it possible to allow users to set a preference to allow
either LIFO or FIFo viewing ( Last in Last out, First in , First out_

Just a thought and possibly a great convenience.

Thanks

Art

Thread Display Options

Can I change the order of posts?

You have three choices over how you view threads:

Linear Mode - posts are displayed chronologically. Posts are shown in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously.

Threaded Mode - a tree is shown along with every post. This shows you the relationship each post has to the others. It's easy to see who responded to whom. Only one post is shown at a time. By clicking on a single post in the post tree, the page will show that post and all posts made in response to it.

Hybrid Mode - This is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is displayed as in the threaded mode, but many posts are shown at the same time as in the linear modes.

It is possible to change the ordering by changing your preferences in the User CP (Control Panel). You may set the default thread display mode by left-clicking on the "User CP" option on the main navigation bar at the top of the page. You'll then see a menu which runs vertially along the left edge. Scroll down to the "Settings & Options" group, and left-click on "Edit Options".

Scroll down this new page to the section titled "Thread Display Options". You'll see a number of attributes which you can set to your liking, including the manner and order in which threads are displayed. Save your changes when done.

That sets the default view. When you're in a thread, look at the top bar. On the right-hand side, you'll see "Display Mode". Left-click on this, and you may change how posts for that particular thread are ordered.

Bill

Thanks Bill

I would also like to echo Don's comments and send my thanks to the MMI's webmeister, Bill for all he does.
I set up a Yahoo group for Tartan 27 owners (T27Owners) and left enrollment open to the public until enough spammers (usually nefarious Biker Chicks) forced me to allow only selective enrollment. It is not so easy keeping the riff-raff out. Of course I have a link on the group for MMI so new owners can find you and the answers to all questions A4. I also 'advertise' for MMI when appropriate on other forums like sailnet, SBO, CF etc.
Thanks MMI and all of you for making this a great forum.

Here is a great tip I discovered for viewing posts:

After signing on you click on New Posts

To the left of each subject is a tiny check mark, click on that and you
will start reading posts or followups that you have not seen before,
bypassing everything you have seen already.

When I am at the end of one subject I use the back button in my
browser and repeat the process with the next message.
