Muriatic Acid Process for cleaning cooling system/Block

Is there a process/discussion for the proper way to do this?

I will conclude from the silence that maybe No..??

If I could add my own 2 cents: If you REALLY need to clean out the cooling system you may wish to try vinegar a very mild acid... you may also wish to research automotive cooling system cleaners for the purpose. I'd go less caustic on anything though.

I'm going to simply take a guess at how I'd do it... after haul out (if you do that annually) let the engine suck in the cleaner. Let it sit a day then flush and then put in your antifreeze.

Sticky

You would not find this thread that talks about the procedures for acid flushing as it was in the "General Maintenance" section, not the "Cooling System".
It is a sticky, so it is easy to find: http://www.moyermarine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127
I've never used the full blown procedure that Don Moyer describes in the thread. Like old-sailor I've been relatively happy with the results of sucking a gallon of white vinegar into the cooling passages and leaving it for a night. Subsequent start up reveals dark water in my exhaust until it clears.
YMMV.

Note: Muriatic acid is much stronger then vinegar and as such should NOT be left in the cooling system over night.

Smile Muriatic Acid Flush

Hi,

I just received my new A4 Manual from Moyer Marine. It's a very good investment if you own an A4. The cooling system chapter has a detailed procedure for flushing out the block and manifold w/muriatic acid.

Take Care,

John

From your prevoius posts you have had the block apart already, so is this wash to clean out the system after the block? Most of the rust crud is found behind the inspection plate to the water jacket. Use a mild acid just to rinse out the block.

How I do it:
Run a hose from the water intake to a trash can. I have an adapter on the end to 1.5" hose and clamp an old shirt on it for a filter.
Run a hose from the exhaust into the same bucket.
Dump 1 gallon of cheap vinegar in the can.
Fill the rest of the can with fresh water.
Run the engine for 20 minutes or more, keeping an eye on the temp and also trying not to CO myself to death.

Fall variation:
Do the same thing, but with antifreeze.

While the manual may say muriatic acid I'd still stick with vinegar. Muriatic acid may eat more than just the crap and start on the metal.

I've generally had good results with muriatic acid, following Don's instructions, but the last time I tried it, a couple of years back, my plastic Vetus waterlift muffler blew up in the engine compartment.

Wink Dark Side

Shawn,

Thanks for the welcome to the dark side! My wife all ready thinks that we are a cult. By the way is there a "secret handshake?"

The oval shaped brass plaque on my reduction gear is missing one of the brass rivets (?) that hold it in place. Does anyone know where I can get a new one. My other thought was to try and fabricate one from some brazing rod.

Appreciate any input,

John

Jesse, do not tell me that.I have a Vetus muffler also.

John, I am not a metallologist ( ), but I might try aluminum if it was me..pretty low on the scale and I'd rather replace the rivet than a plaque.

MY wife thinks the Moyer forum is a cult too...
