Having trouble setting timing on early A4

The problem is rotating the distributor .... I've loosened the 'fork' clamp, but the distributor still does not budge. This is an early model ('67) ... is there a secondary hold that needs loosening or is more force required? tks for any insight, Bob

no secondary anything to loosen...

could just be slightly corroded, or totally solidly rusted shut... I had to destroyed my distributor to be able to remove it, and buy a used one online...
So spray / lubricate, tap nicely on the sides, and be patient

In the meantime, start by oiling the springs inside (if not electronic), this could also help your initial issue
good luck

Early model [63-69] "prestolite/autolite" distributor is different than late model delco. Early model the "fork" is a hold down clamp only. The adjustment screw is horizontal mid way down the distributor shaft and tightens/loosens a "band". You do not have a lot of room - I use an extended nut driver or long screw driver to loosen screw A LITTLE then rotate distributor.
