    Removing Gears and Shaft

    Okay, this is a continuation of a previous thread about drilling a new hole in the pressure plate boss on the gears. We have no room to drill and tap a new hole in the pressure plate so we have to remove the drive shaft and plates etc. from the engine. I've looked at various threads on how to do it but am still a little confused.

    It looks like we can remove the top part of the gear housing (leaving the oil pan) and remove the whole gear assembly and shaft with it, Is that correct?

    Does the drive shaft come out of the engine side easily? It seems getting it separated from the propeller shaft can be tricky. Any other trickiness to be aware of?

    Not sure what you're trying to do. Please clarify to 7th grade level for me.
    Yes, the reversing gear can be removed after removing only it's housing. Getting the housing separated from the gear is a little tricky - I've had a glass of wine and the CRS is kicking in. Check the Moyer Manual. At worst, the gear and the housing will come off together, then you can sort it out.
    Drive shaft out of the engine side????? The shaftline (starting aft) has a couple of nuts, the propeller, the shaft, the shaft coupling, then the engine - unless you have a V-drive. The aft end of the engine has a transmission flange - bolts through the shaft coupling screw into the transmission flange. Usually 3, 4 if you have a reduction gear. Just remove those 3 bolts, slide back the shaft, and you're good to go for the transmission job.
    What did you want to do to the transmission????

      Hmm. Did you happen upon my thread? It's pretty complete. Here are the basics.

      1. Disconnect shaft coupling from output coupling 3 bolts, push shaft with coupling back against the packing

      2. Remove tail shaft nut (pry back lock washer) and have fun

      3. Remove output coupling, press off using the shaft coupling bolts (This is east to get off and a chore to get back on, see the moyer tool or the custom tool i made)

      4. Remove housing (lots of bolts 16?) The entire top half of the back of the engine comes off, so you need to remove water pump too.

      5. Take out reversing gear assembly (This is the easy part, just watch out for oil dripping out of it)

        Thanks Al and John for your instructions! We phoned Moyer Marine and spoke with Ken in the parts department who emailed us 2 pages of detailed, step-by-step instructions on removing and reinstalling a direct drive transmission! We highly recommend anyone else getting these BEFORE starting the job. We'll let you know how it goes.

        We're removing it because the tab (boss) on the pressure plate broke and the pin dropped into the gear box. We recovered the pin but can't drill and tap a new hole in the extremely cramped space under the cockpit of our 1972 27' C&C. I can't get down there at all being 6'4" so we've roped some shorter, more mechanically inclined friends to help.

          Think it through.

          One year ago a friend drilled and tapped the new hole on a C&C 27 reversing gear...absolutely can be done. He got down in there and got it done. You being 6'2" makes that hard...but, if you are able to get in there to take it out you should be able to do the drill and tap.

          You mentioned "smaller" mechanically inclined friends...well, I can tell you to drill and tap will take about 40 minutes or less. Set the "boss" on an angel so that the drill bit can line up on it (may not have to be exactly vertical...a slight angle may help your "driller"...lock the shifter handle into forward to hold in place, put paper towels under it and drill away.

          Whoever is going down in there is going to spend allot more time taking it apart than it would take to drill and tap a hole.
