Condenser screw size...grrrr
Dropped the little condenser mounting machine screw into the bilge. Magnetic and other types of retrieval methods failed.
Anyone know the size of the thing for early model distributor? I think I'll buy about ten of them because it is going to tale 11 attempts to get a new one in. |

What a great time to go electronic! Your boat is sending you a message.

True, but I had all the replacement ignition parts on-hand. Didn't want to waste them.
This particular honey hole in the bilge has several items of interest. Including several bronze screws and at least 1 carb needle. |

My recollection is that those little machine screws are one of the standard small sizes, I believe 10-32. The reason I'm taking pen in hand is to warn you of the critical importance of cutting the little machine screw down to the proper length (once you find the correct diameter). It should NOT extend any distance at all into the inside of the cast iron housing. If you look through the hole where the screw threads as you turn the shaft of the distributor, you'll see the plate on which the little fly weights mount flying past the hole with little or no clearance with the housing. We've seen holes one inch in diameter knocked out of the side of the housing when the condenser mounting screw extends inside the housing.

Yikes! Thanks for the tip.
Currently have several hundred dollars in my MMI shopping cart...including the electronic ignition kit. |

condensor hold down screw-late modelA4 Delco Distributor
Sorry- forgot to post this info I shared with Don in 2020:
Don- here's the solution, after some trial and error. Screw (probably original) on left has threads trashed up near the head, probably by vibration as it came loose, which is why I couldn't get it to tighten. Was having intermittent start and run issues probably related to loose condenser hold down. #6-32x 1/4 did the trick. (late model A4 Pearson built 2/74) In a pinch probably could have inserted a few washers under the screw head which would have raised the screw up enough to have the threads on the bottom half bite into the plate. The 1/4 inch protrudes slightly below the breaker plate, but it's the same length as the original, so shouldn't be a problem (or could cut it off with a Dremel tool) Removing the breaker plate makes the job much easier. (Found these at Home Depot-Everbuilt panhead combo #6-32x 1/4inch-comes in 8 pack, for the next time you drop it in the bilge) |
