Thought the pickup tube may be an issue for a good while. Nearly pulled the tube from the tank. That's why did some testing using a 2nd known good fuel pump. If the pickup tube was bad or failed, a 2nd pump wouldn't pickup fuel after filling tank...but since it did get fuel with the 2nd pump, couldn't be the tube.

I just think more fuel was used than I expected when beating against the wind and waves, so the tank was very close to empty. That's why I got air when I blew in. Fluid level was below the pickup tube. The angle of the boat lean could have sloshed enough gas around so it could be picked up one time, but not another time when it was that low.
The motor did run right for at least a couple hours. I got us out the marina, fought the waves for a good while, and eventually got us 3/4th of the way back to the marina
before we were towed in. Could have burned thru the tank contents I guess. Still learning.

Brought back two carbs and the failed pump from the boat.
Have 2 extra spark arrestors also.

I hear the term 'rebuilt' all the time.

For these A4 carbs, whats the steps to consider it 'rebuilt'?

Clean main jet.
Clean idle jet.

That's what I know to do.

Hello Bill.

In case you find it helpful, here are the instructions that Moyer provides with the rebuild kit available in the MMI catalog:

Latest update

Hadn't posted in a while..so here goes.

Took a while to get back to the boat after the sail/engine issues.
Had to think about the problems and get clear in my head again.

Replaced the trashed 150% genoa with a spare 130% genoa.
Rolls in and out with no issues. Took me a while to figure out the rope path to make it work.

The smaller sail makes it much easier to tack the boat without getting caught up on the rigging.

Found the boat has 3 'balloon' type sails, generally small/medium/large. The biggest one has a sock on it.

Bought/installed water separating fuel filter.

Installed it like this:
tank with 6' fuel line(don't need that much line)/wsfilter/fuel pump/carb.
Had trouble picking up fuel into the filter at first but with the high pressure transfer pump, was able to get fuel flowing. This was probably a sign I missed.

Took the boat for a ride 3/10/19. Going out, all was well. No issues.
Did some back and forth but found there was a bit more fog in the lake then I was comfortable with.

Pulled in the sails and started motoring back to shore.

Got close to the last turn before the marina and heard the sound of the motor slowing down(just like it did for the bad weather). At first I headed for a dolphin to tie up but still had some forward momentum. Motor did shut off. Pulled the genoa out and had just enough wind to make the last turn and guide the boat to a fuel dock. Was only about 75' from where the motor quit.

After tie up, I opened up the engine box/port locker. The water separating fuel filter was dry.

Again did some fuel testing with my high pressure transfer pump. That pump could move fuel but the regular carb pump could not.

Did this:
1)Reduced length of fuel hose from tank to filter from 6' to 2'. Less hose, less to suck on.
2)Rearranged the system to work like this---> tank/pump/wsfilter/carb.
Just flipped the pump and the wsfilter sequence.

Doing this, the wsfilter filled up and the engine started normally.
Was able to get back to dock unaided.

Apparently(and this is a guess), the lower pressure pump did not have enough suction to pickup the gas thru the long fuel lines and draw it thru the filter.

I thought by putting the filter on the pressure side, that would reduce the suction effort. For the short ride to the slip, it seemed to have fixed that issue. That's how it stands today.

Found a replacement Kenyon knot meter(original to boat) that was supposed to work. Installed it but it didn't work for me. With no way to test the thru hull part, I gave up on that.

Replaced the missing registration numbers on the nose. Some letters had peeled off.

Have a video of the trip where the sail blew apart. This was before the bad weather came in and the motor quit. The boy is the son of my friend driving the boat. He was laughing his head off, watching the water go by. Yes everybody had a life jacket on.

Went to the E27 today to check on it and as usual, give the engine some run time.

Engine fired right off with a little choke. Revving in neutral sounded normal.

Decided to run it in fwd gear for a few minutes. Boat was tied up.
This is where the unusual situation happened.

When the throttle was about 1/2 way(about 1100rpm) in gear, things were good.
But when I went past about 1/2 throttle, in gear, the motor would bog down instead of rev up.

Video with sound here.
http://cajun.dyndns.org:81/seeker/vid_20191012.mp4

Is possible the main jet may be dirty after a summer of not much use due to the heat.
I also cannot vouch for the cleanliness of the folding prop.

At one point, I got a single backfire/sputter that can be heard in the video.

Engine was marked at tdc manually, then set with a timing light using that mark on the fly wheel.

Running electronic ignition system.
Gas has been in the tank since March probably.
The water seperating filter began leaking under fuel pressure. Pulled it not to have it play into this. Went back to regular line fuel filter.
The carb adjuster is set about 1.5 turns out.

Nothing has been touched at this point, mechanical wise.
Did not check how hard it is to spin the propshaft since wasn't dressed/equipped to do dirty work.
May still update this post with more info as it comes to mind.

Any thoughts welcome.

Working on new hand rails. Got a board of south american teak and cut it into 3 strips. Traced the pattern of handholds from port side interior rail, onto the strips. Cut out the handholds. Now need to round the edges and do some wood treatment. Three left rails are the new ones. Right rail is the cabin rail used for pattern.

Cajun, I know it has been a few weeks since you posted the engine stuff, but I always suspect a dirty prop when it bogs down in the slip.

Lotsa work to do on those handrails, but they should look nice when they are done.

Just wondering.... Did you consider replacing with stainless?

I don't have too much teak on our vessel, but it's still too much for me.

Bill, I am with you 100%. I have four 48" long stainless hand rails, ready to go on as soon as I get off my lazy rear-end and get the deck work done/painted.

I bought these a long time ago on eBay, but if I were doing it again, a buddy of mine has been refurbing his Ranger 33 (alas, he ripped out the A-4 and jammed a 3-cyl diesel in it). He had some DIY stainless fittings that were simpler and easier than what I will install. I may try to sell my rails and do it like his. He also has access to long SS tubing, so that helped a little bit..he could do one long run all the way along the cabin.

Can't really explain why, but I'm generally a person who keeps things as they come from the factory unless the change is exceptionally better.
ex: replacing points with electronic sensor.
My 73 super beetle is fully stock except for front disc brakes.

The boat came with a 7 loop wood handrail so that's what I'm putting back.
Didn't want to have to make new holes/patch old holes in the cabin roof due to length/position differences.
Not to mention I have no metal working skills.

Everything I do on this tub has its budget limit.
Buying a board and cutting on it is something I can do without huge bucks.
Time and skill I have, lots of money I don't.

Originally a friend said he would cut and shape the wood for me(had a nice shop) but he passed away 2 weeks ago. So went pickup the board and did it myself.

Haven't gone back and retried the 'in gear throttle' since the last time.

I think I'm going to use brass hardware to hold the rails to the cabin to avoid the extreme nut/bolt rust that happened before.

Thanks for comment guys. Trying to see if I can find a good deal on a router to round the edges of the rails.

Brass is too weak, and does not hold up well in a salt water environment. Use Bronze or Stainless Steel.

Edward...had the right idea in mind but used the wrong word. Yes intend to use bronze hardware if I can find it, stainless if I can't.

Thank you for that correction.

Taking forever with the heat, but rails finished

With the down south heat, have to pick the day to get outdoor stuff done.
In this case, the work was with the cabin rails. Bought a used router for $40 off craigslist. Used it to round the top edges. Got the wood sanded and finished. Looks good if I say so myself. Also sanded/refinished the cabin entry boards as their coating was peeling off.

Probably will wait till it cools off to test fit on the boat. Coincidentally that red tank was the factory E27 tank that rusted thru and was replaced with a plastic tank.
