engine starts but

My engine used to run fine and started on the first turn of the starter with no choke. Now it sputers and knocks and then dies after about 30 sec. after 5 or six times of this it will stay running and then pick up rpms and run smooth . I just put in electronic ignition and an adjustable main jet from MM, may be I just go back to points and a fixed jet any suggestions on what is wrong

Talking

Prior to installing the adjustable main jet you were probably running too rich which made it easy to start with no choke. Now with the new jet you have unmasked a choke problem (possibly). Check your choke cable and be sure it closes the choke fully. Your new problem may actually be a good sign.

Exclamation No choke not good!

If your A-4 starts easy when cold without the choke that is an indication of a rich running condition. I'll bet your idle is to rich and or your float setting may be to high. The nature af an engine equiped with an "up-draft" carb is to start hard when cold which is why a good working choke is a necessity.
What do your plugs look like? Also have you reset the timing since installing the electronic ignition? The electronic ignition should vastly improve running conditions and once adjusted it should not change regarding performance for a long long time.
