Coolant Dispensation
While waiting for my new shaft from H&H I figured to spend the time on a useful project that's been in the works awhile: increasing the size of the coolant "drain" holes on the block and modifying the input fitting at the coolant chamber cover. All this is an effort to improve distribution of coolant in the block and eliminate "dead" spots. As a side benefit I have installed an easy drain system which spills "0" antifreeze when used. All the hardware is available from McMasterCarr. In working with a late block it is important to be aware that while the forward hole is easy to drill and tap out to 1/4" NPT, the aft hole has only about 1" separation from the cylinder and care must be taken not to allow the drill to plunge any further into the chamber; this should also be kept in mind in the event of a broken nipple in that hole. The coolant distribution now becomes three pronged at 1/4"-3/8"-1/4" all NPT.

Hanley, I have thought of your set up, a few times.
What about having three inlets on that cover? It seems easy enough to do. |

That is kinda what the early side cover did, but my purpose is the maximum area of flow from inlet to exit. The coolant exits high and enters low, the lower the better. Also my system spreads the coolant much better than the original early plate. In addition it ends all impact of coolant at the very spot where it had been blasting since the engine was new.
