Accessory Drive bearing replacement
So, I am rebuilding a used accessory drive I bought off ebay. I ordered the bearings from Moyer today and expect them tomorrow..it was nice talking to Ken today!
What I am trying to figure out is the procedure to get the roll pin out so I can get the big gear off and the bearing out that is in between the gears on the shaft. I also need to figure out how to remove the inner race at the other end too..Pounding the one bearing out of the accessory drive housing was easy. edit - I also plan to do the oil pool modification while I have this apart..that will be easy as the write up in the Moyer tech tips is written to make it a no brainer.

Shawn - nothing like a nice set of hardened punches, or a project that totally justifies a useful new tool.
Why are you rebuilding a second drive? Just curious... I have one also from the previous engine, and I was eying it today to do a bracket modification for a coolant pump mounting (ala Indigo off the alternator belt.) Now I have to look for tech notes on oil pools....

Jeff...I can't believe that I never needed a good set of punches until now!
And, no offense to Moyer, but, I got this one cheap enough on ebay that I can rebuild it with Moyer parts and unbolt the old and bolt on the new in 15 minutes for cheaper than I could have sent them my original from 1977 as a core and wait for a rebuild (or deal with waiting on the core credit)..plus I spread out the expenditures this way in a couple of less than $100 chunks. I bought this unit last summer, and just got the bearings today. My current plan after I take the 18 layers of paint and crud off my present accessory drive and I'll likely send it to Moyer so they can rebuild it and have it ready to go to the next customer to pay it forward. I don't expect my rebuilt unit to fail in the time I own this boat if the OEM one lasted 40 years without the oil level mod and it being noisy for several years now. I just have to do the oil level mod myself on my ebay unit...plus now I know exactly how the thing is constructed since I am taking it apart and putting it back together. Here is the oil pool link - http://www.moyermarine.com/access_repair.htm

This roll pin sure is being a pain...I beat on it for a few minutes last night and gave up after it did not budge. Gonna need to put the gear & shaft in a vice I guess. Sprayed some cheap penetrating oil on it to let it soak a little bit.
Might need a bigger hammer, too.

Shawn, please consider pressing the roll pin out rather than beating on it. With a big enough vise and a short enough drift it's pretty easy and a lot less violent.
It drove me nuts watching the old custom choppers show with the dysfunctional family from Orange County, New York. Everything they did was beat into place: forks into triple trees, axles through wheels, I even saw them install a chrome air cleaner and finish it off with a couple of taps with a dead blow hammer.

Shawn - maybe you can justify a small arbor press now?
Cheap semi-hard pins: Go down to your local hardware store, and buy a couple 'jobber' length drill bits where the shank size is exactly what you need. You can grind/score them to approximate length, snap them off and grind the ends flat to the exact length you need.

Shawn, I'm new here - been 'lurking' for some time - I wonder if that roll pin is in a tapered hole? Have you tried to tap it out in the other direction ? Just a thought - I used to encounter
this type of issue way back in the 'keypunch'/ data entry days Rick |

It always amazes me what a wonderful source of information and advice comes from the members of this forum. This thread is a classic example.

one thing I find is that many times guys will beat something while it is on a non rigid work platform. The things just bounce.
If I was doing that roll pin, it would be on a wooden block, with a hole drilled for the pin, on the garage floor. You would be surprised how effective that is..... |

RC..I understand what you mean (and when I was beating on it, I was kneelingt down using the garage floor with a piece of wood underneath.) The real problem here is that the shaft is easy to rotate...the only real part I can grab is the big gear and I am trying not to tear up the teeth...so lining everything up with only two hands and not marring gear teeth is a bit of a challenge (more below.)
My bench vise broke, but I am getting my hands on another one soon, that may be large enough to use the way Neil suggested, and I've gotten a couple sorta cheap drill bits as BP suggested and chopped one down to just be longer than the hole. I am also checking out local stores to see if a small bench top "A frame" press or an arbor press is available. The local Lowe's is a joke for those types of tools (lots of blow up lawn ornaments though!), but one of the employees pointed me to some other local places that might carry them. If I am not successful locally, Harbor Freight can ship one in a few days. My stepfather has a 12 ton shop press if I feel like driving the 20 minutes to his house to use it. - I have lots of options. There is no REAL timetable to this project, so I am not in a rush. This unit is a replacement for the one in the boat that will likely run (noisily) for another 20+ years if I left it alone. I was hoping to get this one in before I re-installed the distributor and fired her up, but there is no real requirement to do so..just a few extra bolts if I need to disassemble again.

I promise, one successful press operation and you'll never be tempted to bring out the hammer again.

Neil, I totally get it. I borrowed my step-father's press several years ago for several months when I did some work on my project car.
I am just not sure why I haven't already gotten my own press top replace it.

Shawn,
Do you have a small drill press? it should work as an ad-hoc press for small things like that. Or a bench vice? Or.... a woodworkers bar clamp. Think outside the box.

lat 64, yes I have a drill press, which would probably act a lot like an arbor press come to think of it.
But, down here in the main 48 we don't think outside the box...the world is our oyster!!!
