Tachometer Problem

Hello all, hope everyone has a great New Year's holiday.

For my 1st post, I wonder if I could get some feedback regarding a tachometer issue that just came up.

Recently, I restarted my A4 after a marina pit-stop. Everything worked fine (and continues to do so). But, the tachometer reading was about 1/10th what it should've been. It barely registers over 600-800 RPMs, but the engine is working just fine.

Before this pit-stop, the tach gave normal readings.

Any ideas? Are there any tests that might provide more insight?

Note: my oil pressure sender is sending whacky readings on occasion, and the ammeter is not working. Perhaps this is all indicating another more general electrical problem? Are these signs. maybe, of a failing alternator?

Thanks, folks.

MSLv3,

Assuming you have a electrical tachometer, have you tried checking the connection from the back of the alternator? The electrical tachometer is connected to the AC tap on the back of the alternator. Most likely you have a connection issue.

If you have one of those mechanical tachs then I would check the cable if it is coming loose from where it is connected to the engine for some reason.

Just some things you could check.
