TDC? Drill a hole on FW Cooled Engines

Hey all,
Sooooo after all my timing sessions in working out my knock, the question is for those of us not willing to pull the pump pulley off the end of the shaft:

Why not drill a small viewing hole in the cover to see the pin in the shaft for TDC?

It could be neatly plugged when not used.

Just an idea...

Any reasons you can think of to not do this??? I have my drill and centering punch in position ready to pull the trigger...

Cheers!

small portlight would work

...with an LED light on the interior...or better yet permanently mount a timing light that fires off on each TDC cycle so all you have to do is look at your engine when it is running to verify you are perfectly timed on TDC and the advance is good.

Just make a mark/line on the pulley outer track and a corresponding mark
on the block with a file when at top dead center should do it

..and pipe the timing data into a ECU to anylize and compare to engineload/speed and O2 sensor to trigger a modified version of the new engine warning lights developed by Niel.

Or just paint a mark or drill a hole.

developing ap for smart phone

will receive ECU data, sync with all running A4's in a 50 mile radius for mean of TDC degrees and dynamically adjust the timing.

I can't see the pin unless I take the pulley and cover off. Feel pretty good about TDC though using careful feeler wire technique. Guess I could mark this theoretical TDC with a paint mark....

Thanks Art! This sounds like a good permanent solution all puns aside.

Can you translate data to NMEA 083 sentences to send to wireless hub for my old Nexus suite of nav stuff to react to puffs of headwind to surge the engine throttle for maintaining speed?

Ed?

Ok i'll stop.

Another option from a sharp member a while back

. . . and I'm doing it on both of my engines, boat and spare. It's a little more work than a Sharpie but it's way cool. Also I'm working on a simple mod to be able to differentiate between compression and exhaust stroke for timing. I've heard one too many stories about timing 180° out (the current mark doesn't know the difference).
