what do we have here?
A year ago I took a tour of the SS American Victory berthed in Tampa. She is a museum now.
There was this engine just sitting there, all alone and no sign. Should be pictures below. |

Yes, both Fred and Barney might have actually worked on that one.

is that a utility four?
there is a logo cast into the block that looks like an amalgamation of a U and an F

this looks like an electrical engine... abandoned batteries to prove it
more seriously, it is interesting to see what previous version of our A4 looked like

+1 on the Utility 4, I think. The snippet I read says that many of these were used on lifeboats, which fits with where you found it.

“UF” stands for “Universal Foundry”

I see a magneto—which does not need a battery eh?
My Atomic 2 has a mag like that. More argument that it was in a lifeboat.

My research shows the 'BN1" below the 'UF' on the block indicates it is a Utility Four.

Probably a Utility Four..
There were life boats on the boat but they were off limits. Wonder what year that engine is. The ship was launched 1945. |

Note the hose running from under the oil cap on the flywheel end back to the flame arrestor.

Bill, that's an early "SPCV" system like on our A-4's.

That's what I figured. Some sort of PCV configuration.....
How do they dispose of the exhaust in a lifeboat installation? I've seen them in operation (drills, etc.), but never noticed. Bill Last edited by Administrator; 04-16-2020 at 11:17 AM. |

I'm digging what I think is a manual pump for changing the oil. Located aft of the fuel pump on the aft housing. The early model A-4 has it located down low between the carb and fuel pump. Not the easiest place to reach.

I want that 8 HP single! I really don't know why, or what I'd do with it, it just seems like a really cool old motor to have in the shop.

You would paint it pink "for your daughter" (right) and mount it on a go-kart.

Lat64, I missed that thread. Yours is the "Atomic 2", which I've heard of before, but I never knew there was an "Atomic 1".
