Do I need the Anti-siphon kit?

Hi everybody,

I am the proud new owner of a '78 Catalina 27 with an Atomic 4.

The boat and engine are in good shape but I want to make sure everything is up to snuff.

I am considering the Anti-siphon kit, but I am not sure if I need it or not. Based on the pictures of my current setup, what do you think?

Thank you in advance.

Offcourse, welcome to the MMI Afourian forum.

The need for an anti-siphon is dependent as to where the waterline is in relation to the exhaust height "at all angles of heel". Where is yours in relation to the pic and/or what boat?

Good morning,
I have a Catalina 79, exact same arrangement. No need to change it until it crumbles due to corrosion, something it will do every 10 years or so, if you sail in salted water. It happened to nearly all C27 salted owners, including me; I went the easy way:

You will find here Don's opinion (considered that as solid as the Bible) on C27 exhaust

lots of discussions on the matter

With the engine removed , I also went to check the wire-reinforced exhaust pipe, it was totally collapsed, internally and externally. So engine breathes much better now, but is more noisy. I have "straightened" a little the flex pipe, and this may also be the reason; if a little more water was puddling at the bottom of the hose, that would reduce noise; something I will try soon.

from what I understand, C27 do not need a lift; some have added one, it makes the engine quieter.

I just realized you may be sailing the great lakes... your exhaust may last a lifetime

On the other hand, there is no downside to adding anti siphon protection.
