you really don't need the special tools get 3 2" bolts to get the flange off there's a good tech note from don on how to do it w/ or w/out the tools k

I found that I didn't have enough room to use all of the tools- the gap between the prop shft couplers wasn't big enough. But the long handle to hold the shaft steady was really handy.

Important question
in the mmi manual rebuilding / reassembly section, don says that the output coupling has to be seated against a special flat washer which is not shown in the universal parts diagram.
i am reassembling and i have not found such a washer. is don referreing to the flat lock washer with the ears you bend to hold the nut on at the end? thanks

It rides on the tail shaft of the reversing gear.

To be more clear there is a convex permanent washer on the shaft that is part of the shaft and the concave washer fits up against it.

what concave washer?
all that came off the shaft were some ball bearing assemblies, rings, etc. i see the permanent washer on the shaft but the only other one i have loose is the lock washer with the ears, which the final nut butts up onto, per the mmi manual.
can u tell me the part # of the concave washer as listed in the pasts diagram in the universal motors parts manual?

i think i have & understand everything in this diagram
the problem is that in the mmi manual [rebuilding, reassembly section] don says the flat washer is not listed in any parts manual...maybe that once was true but no longer is? btw-- the parts manual and owners manual for the a4 is available & downloadable at cncphotoalbum.com

Actually now that I've read the description in the online catalog you need that spacer if you have a direct drive. I am not sure about other configurations.

i have direct drive
is it rough surfaced on one side? could it be that it's contained inside another bearing or disk and did not come loose when i went in to change the rear oil seal? i did not disassemble everything...just enough to get at that seal

Its probly still butted up against the permanent washer where it belongs. The convex and concave kind of cause a sticking together withe the oil. If you put your hand in there and scratch the permanent washer with your finger you might feel the groove between it and the spacer.

i have a convex / concave assembly, which i thought held the old oil seal...so i took that out when replacing the seal....still have it though
it is a bit confusing because the replacement seal is open on the side facing forward [toward trans and motor]--fits perfectly into the large seal holder however....the convex concave assembly which held the old seal is closed on each side... so is that it? should i put it back in? ..not sure it will fit with the new seal in there as well do you have a pix? sounds like i may have to call ken and/or just order that piece.

Actually there is a woodruff key that would prevent it from coming off if you did not remove the woodruff key it should still be on the shaft

The spacer would be between number 11 and number 2 on shaft 10. Per your diagram.

YES. Woodruff... here at work we just call them key stock. If you never removed it that washer/spacer could not have came off.
