Use Oil Pressure Sender?
Apropros of this discussion is a method I used 30 years ago with a prior Atomic 4. We pulled the oil pressure sending unit and put a tube over the nipple then started the engine. Oil streamed out the tube. When it sputtered we shut it down. It took no time at all. While we abandoned that method for hand pumping out the dipstick (I now use a cordless drill driven transfer pump), which gets at least 3 qts, I often wonder if there's any harm done by the old method. Comments?

Re: using indigo filter for oil change
I have never tried to change the oil via the extra port on the indigo filter,
but I suspect that you would need a quick power pump in order to pull as much oil as you could from directly in the crankcase sump. The indigo filter takes a portion of the oil, not all the oil , and passes it thru the filter. Perhaps you could let us know how powerful a pump, or conversely, what is the least powerful pump that will do a adequate job. I am happy with using the transmission sump for now. Though I like the indigo oil filter. |

Art...the beauty of this user friendly forum is that you can edit posts at any time. If you edit after about 120 seconds from the original post (Bill could confirm the that, it is a guess), it shows the "last edited by:" line at the end of the post, and you can even explain why!! (What that means is if you are quick enough you can sometimes edit and no one will know!)
Thanks for your feedback about the Indigo filter. I have a sailing buddy that knows the "Indigo guy" and says he is crazy, but smart as hell and a decent engineer, and it sounds like he is as obsessed with Atomic4's as the Moyer crew. As I have done countless times before, I went over to the Indigo site again today and almost ordered that oil filter kit...maybe I'll send a link to my wife for a Christmas idea instead. This year there is going to be nothing under the tree except boat stuff!

Thanks
Thanks for the kind words and information.
Regarding Tom Stevens of Indigo Electronics, I have nothing but respect for his Intelligence and Integrity. I have dealt with him for over 10 years and found him highly informed, friendly, cooperative and willingly to share his knowledge. I have especially appreciated his assistance in restoring my Tartan 34C, Tom has one as well. I trust and value every word Tom has ever said to me. He recently underwent a fairly significant operation to his leg. I hope all wish him well. Art |

Tom Stevens
Art, just to be clear (since emotions & humor are hard to decipher on the Internet) - I do not think my friend ever implied anything ill towards Mr. Stevens (thanks for reminding me of his name.) I do not know how they know each other...my buddy Mike seems to know everybody! This discussion came up last summer while we were cruising and my friend was on board helping me diagnose the intermittent shutdown problem while in a marina in St. Michael's. (which I've now decided was a coil).
Anyway, the fact that we had an Atomic4 on my boat brought up Tom and his contributions to the A4 community. I feel that based on how my friend described Tom would also imply he has nothing but respect for him as well..."crazy" was said in a good way...sorry that didn't come out properly in my initial post. He was great to me on the phone when I called him over a year ago to order the PCV kit. Just wanted to make sure my comments were not misconstrued...my thoughts are with Tom for a speedy recovery also

Oil change through Indigo's oil filter port....
Look at my photo under my post and you will see the transfer pump I installed. It is an oil/fuel tranfer pump I found on ebay. It has about a 20 inch power lead with two alligator clamps that I simply hooked to the positive & negative leads on my starter and I was pumping oil! There are several on ebay now. Believe me...this pump does the trick! Here is one ebay item number that you can search. 360214377310
Check it out! Dave B |

I can't find an oil change kit at Indigo. Do you have the link?
Thanks...

Rob-
It isn't actually just a dedicated CHANGE kit. It's part of a filter system. Here's the link (http://www.atomic4.com/oilfilter.html) Read thru the specs and you'll see where he talks about an "EZ Drain connection". If you just want an oil change kit, MMI sells one here on this site... http://www.moyermarine.com/cgi-bin/s...rebuilder.html It's quick and easy to install and makes oil changes a breeze.
