Columbia 27 exhaust
I have a Columbia 28, 1970. My question is, does anyone know how to set up the entire exhaust system in said boat? I have such limited room that I am having problems figuring it out. I've looked at how Moyer's states as to how to do it but there I run into problems. I might be able to get the exhaust loop high enough but I can't get the proper drop to the water lock muffler. Would appreciate any help.
Thanks Jess |

Jess,
Do you have room under the engine in the bilge for a small Vetus water trap? This muffler and location is one of the only options available if you do not have a custom jacketed stand pipe made. |

I also have a 1968 Columbia 28. I replaced my exhaust about 10 years ago. I have no water lift muffler. The exhaust goes fairly straight back from the engine and rises up at the transom about 18 inches above the water line. I've had the boat for over 20 years and have never had any exhaust problems. It was quite a job removing the old exhaust but once I got it out I just had someone assemble and weld an exact copy.

Columbia exhaust
The 21, 22, 28, and the 36 are all designed by Wm. Crealock and are of similar vintage. I think Jess and dbeiss may have the same (originally) dry exhaust as my 36.
My original C36 owner's manual has some factory drawings of the exhaust system. I can scan those for you and post them here if you think that might help. Let me know. Russ

Yes Russ, please scan and post. I'd like to see them too.
Jess, can you identify what type of exhaust the boat had originally (waterlift, standpipe or water jacket)? Also, exactly what do you mean by "can't get the proper drop to the water lock muffler"? Is it the 8" dimension usually recommended from the water injection point to the waterlift inlet?

OK, water jacketed exhaust with anti-following sea backwash loop & silencer. Let's see if Jess's is similar.
Waterlifts started becoming commonplace in fiberglass sailboats sometime in the early 70's. Prior to that standpipes or water jackets like Russ's were the norm. Russ, the reason your hot section is corrosion free is because there's no water injection like the rest of us waterlift guys.

I don't have the silencer. The drawing was the plan i'm sure but mine just has the high backwash loop.
My flange does have some rust, yes, but it's It's the jacketed part that is just shiny metal with some thin copper-colored paint that flakes off easily. I would think that galvanized pipe would be a dull zinc color and all corroded. The pic shows the single-wall pipe from the manifold flange—still all nice. That gray is spray galvanizing. Don't bother. Photo also shows where the paint is flaking off from some kind of reaction to the green copper oxide from the bronze ell at the water inlet I keep forgetting to confirm what type of metal it is when I'm at the boat. Sorry. Anyway maybe if Jesse's is the same, he can check his alloy type. ![]() Russ
