Mystery coil

I pulled off the coil which had been running on my A4 for years - how many ? don't know. It was measuring 7.1 ohm. The old coil is a metal can Delco Remy. The can is embossed low down with 069, and below that 12V. Anyone recognise the number, or is it one some cowboy fitted?

I have never heard of a coil at 7.1 ohms across clean terminals still firing but I guess it could happen - sure wouldn't have to worry about resistors.

Yes, weird. I'm no stranger to multimeters and tested it three times, and against a good coil which measured right - 4.3.

I think my coil has the same embossed "069". I'll check next time I'm down there.

I've got a new coil to install thinking that mine is going bad...

My block would be about the same vintage. Maybe 069 is 1969?

That number under the coil on the gear housing is the casting date for that part; compare to the date near the arrestor on the block itself.

I was curious to see what a 1969 coil looked like. I had coil issues when I first got my boat. I think I'm on coil 2 or 3. The current one has been in there for 2 or 3 years though.

Maybe Universal decided to do a production run of say 250 or 500 A4s and put out a bid for that number of coils, which Delco won, and installed them during "that" time frame. They are starting to fail about now so that is why we are noticing so many of them.

Then again maybe not.

TRUE GRIT

Mine didn't 'fail' it just measured 7.1 ohm.

"They are starting to fail about now"

40+ years, not too bad.

they don't make em like they used to

It was a question of curiosity rather than diagnosis. I do not trust that coil though, the measurement is wacky.

I recommend storing it in a zip lock bag in case it decides to leak oil.
