Placement of Water Temp Sending Unit
Hi Don~
I am wondering if the Water Temp Sending Unit would give a more accurate reading of the temperature of the Coolant, if it were placed at the intake side of the flange mount MMI water pump. The sending unit is currently mounted in the fwd end of the head, and fluctuates a lot, given the proximity of the thermostat. |

Out of curiosity are you talking about a RWC or FWC engine? Not sure why I'm curious because my reply would be the same. The pump intake is the coolest part of the system so temps measured there wouldn't be meaningful. The exit at the manifold is the hottest part of the system so sensing there would be skewed at the other end of the spectrum.
The cooling system is controlled by the thermostat so sensing there tells you what the engine is seeing too. I suspect the fluctuations you're seeing are the effect of the thermostat opening and closing.

It would provide a before and after view if you still had the original temp sender too and were FWC. Otherwise it would not mean much.

placement of water temp sending unit (FWC)
My original water temp sender placement is at the front of the head,
the secondary water temp sending unit placed at the intake side of the flange water pump would tell me the temperature of the coolant after it leaves the heat exchanger, correct? |

I moved my temp sender from the fwd end of the head to a tee at the outlet from the manifold. I was happy with the change.
