Marital advice

So, I need some serious advice. I found this motor here in town and want it bad. I told wife I was not interested because nothing except the backfire preventer is useful for our A-4. But look at it! it's sooo cute! I went to look at it for real. It weighs about 150 # or so. I could lift into the minivan all by myself.

What do I do?

Cool need advice

Russ For a hundred bucks how can you go wrong???
It will give you something to screw around with this winter, if you get it up and running and want to get rid of it sell it to a fishing boat they can use it to run a net winch or you could stick it in a small whale boat. List it on Craig's list down here in Orange county and someone will use it for a harbor cruiser, weight is less than the battery's they use for the electric (Duffy type)boats. There are hundreds of them here in New Port alone
GO FOR IT.

What can it hurt? Get it.

If I had it I would put it right next to that stack of boxes containing my 1954 Royal Enfield motorcycle......

Russ,

Offer him $50. If he takes it, use the $45 that you saved and take the missus out to dinner and tell her that dinner was being paid for with money you made on a "boat deal." It shows her that:

1. One of the reasons you like boating is to be able to take her out to dinner
2. You CAN make money in boat deals
3. It sets the stage for future "boat deals"
4. You are a shrewd negotiator

Tell her nothing else.

For you buy the engine.
For her roses followed by dinner out with wine and dancing (no kids) followed by a hot time in bed afterward.
It'll work. You'll be happy you did it.

That flame arrestor is $170 on this website. You saved $75, AND you got a nice toy.

Be honest, 'fess up, it's less than two tanks of gas.....

Look here Russ, you are doing this all wrong. Tell the wife "darling, tuck that little engine under your arm and lug it home (wink and raise an eyebrow at this point) and I'll take you out to a steak AND rib dinner....and throw in a rose!"

The hardest part of all of that will be suffering through the steak and rib dinner .. ..you're good to go!

Thumbs up

That thing comes in a rack and has spare parts!

Price reduced and "make an offer"...you already own that thing.

Wait, when did you upgrade to the mini-van? What happened the Toyota Camry you used for hauling the A-4 around?

I'd be sure and point out to her that this will GUARANTEE you'll be in the garage and out of her hair for days (if not weeks) on end.
THEN throw in the dinner and maybe a movie to close the deal...

Another strategy is to do what I did years ago when I bought a Honda CB750-4 project motorcycle surreptitiously. Didn't breathe a word about it during the two week lag time between purchase and delivery. The afternoon arrived and I made sure I was home to receive it (multiple meanings there)

"What are you doing home so early?"
"No reason. Short day today."
"Really? Then why are you always looking out the window?"
"I am? Didn't notice."
"Yeah, you are."
after maybe 15 minutes
"Cool. It's here!"
"WHAT'S here?"
"My new motorcycle."
"Your WHAT? You bought that without talking with me? Why would you do that?"
"I figured I was going to hear it anyway and this way I had an extra two weeks of peace. Besides, I decided it was high time for me to take my (fill in synonym of choice for hackeysack) out of your purse."

Now, that may sound selfish and a bit harsh but guess what? Five years later when I accidentally bought Kalina without consulting her it was no big deal. In addition, she knew I had an ace in the hole. If the conversation turned ugly we'd be discussing her extensive collections of Disney figurines, Teddy bears and commemorative Elvis plates.

Cool...you are not alone in that way of thinking Neil.

So Russ, did you get the engine?

" a small ski hill rope tow"
How did you know?🎿Skiing since 1963.

"1954 Royal Enfield motorcycle"
Almost bought a 441 "victom" in 1980. Alas

"2. You CAN make money in boat deals"
Tom, she's not stupid. In fact she's smarter than me. That's what I'm so worried about.

True grit, you Dog you!🌹

"That flame arrestor is $170"
My best plan yet.

"suffering through the steak and rib dinner"
I'll throw myself on that grenade for you all.🙈🙉🙊

"when did you upgrade to the mini-van?"
In '09. You weren't supposed to find out. Camry still here. Just leaks oil right now.

"What are you doing home so early?"
Sorry Neil, I'm only allowed one mistress. A Columbia 36.

"So Russ, did you get the engine?"
I'll call on it tomorrow😈

"buy it, send it to me."
Ha, nice try.

"Sometimes it's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission"
My wife often uses this very quote. Guess I will just say "the devil made me do it"!

Cheers,

My third boat was a '78 Bristol 29.9

Got home after I purchased it and told the wife.

"Hi hon, just bought a 30 grand sailboat."

Her response, "Can we afford it?"

"You won't even notice a budget change."

"Ok"

Boat purchasing....like a boss!!

Smile Got it!

We'll see how long that happy face stands.

Well folks, here's some photos of my new baby. I put the beer bottle there for scale. It's just so small!

I'll start another thread and close this one soon, as it is no longer for sale.
See next post for a few more.

A few more:

The starter is from a Mercury outboard with a modified gear. The white SEA Twin(tag) is the spare parts motor with no reverse gear. The tag on gearbox is definitly Universal. I guess the spare was not a Universal A-2

Wish me luck. I just sent my wife a link to this thread.

Neil & Ed,

Those pics are a good inspiration. They help show how the alt. and stuff should go together too.

Neil, Can you e-mail me a larger version of that photo you have or tell me where it came from? There is a dearth of info on the Kermath Sea Twin/Universal A-2 out there. Some promising leads but not a whole lot of data.

The original E-Bay ad those came from had a lot of pictures. Alas, it is no longer accessable.

I did find this reproduction of the specs page of the original Kermath Sea Twin manual:
