    Need help

Need a Qualified Atomic 4 Mechanic

A mechanic in Rhode Island worked on my Atomic 4 last year and a number of mistakes where made on my engine including putting a hole in the engine while installing an electric fuel pump.

I need a knowledgeable Atomic 4 mechanic to come and look at the engine to let me know if the integrity of the engine has been compromised I'm in Barrington Rhode Island call me anytime day or nite

    Hi Steve:

    Welcome to the Forum!

Have a picture? Or a few pictures? Where is the hole, and did the engine ever run afterward?

          Sounds like alcohol was involved.

You should use ironic quote marks when referring to that "mechanic"

Seriously, Yes, do post a photo. We'll get the A-team on this.

            Hey guys,
Just wondering if one of you guys that live near this gentleman would be interested in looking at his engine. If one of you fine fellows had some spare time, perhaps you might call him and make some arrangement.

I just spoke with Steven re: his engine. Sounds to me like a couple of different issues happening there. I didn't hear anything in our conversation to suggest the engine wouldn't run if the right guy had a look at it. What it does sound like is that someone charged him for their learning experience and didn't get to the crux of the problem with it.

-difficulty starting: he'd be charged for carb rebuild that didn't happen...taking it apart and cleaning it up might suffice.
-popping when trying to start....either timing moved because of a loose nut or valves stuck or sticking.
-difficulty starting...normal troubleshooting, again keeping in mind they worked on fuel system and there (in my mind) is a possibility of valves sticking.
-they did a repair on the block near the fuel pump and apparently welded over the oil pressure adjustment screw...that and OPSS would need to be looked at.

But the engine does start? The first thinng i'd do is look to see if the choke is adjusted correctly. The "mechanic" probably didn't understand how to adjust the choke correctly.
It took me awhile to figure it out in my early A4 days.......

IMHO the #1 weakness of the A4 is that in many (most?) parts of the country there is little to no competent help to be had. Around here the local Western Auto guys know what parts fit it, Moyer Marine isn't that far away, and Vosbury's are old time A4 hands. Other places, not so much. Many shops will take one look and suggest a diesel replacement instead of new spark plugs
