The use of hard copper lines for cooling is interesting. Not something I think I'd do on my own motor, but it seems to work in this case.

The change from the compression fittings to the cast 'crossover' fittings between the head & block from the A-2 to the early model A-4 is interesting as well. The cast pieces are $$, and the tube with nuts is cheap.

I opened it up.
Here's a couple of shots of the cylinders and reversing gear.

Cylinder walls seem good. Valves look ok too. I was wrong, I thought they were stuck because there was no compression, but they go up and down jus' fine. I think the rings are worn or stuck.

If Bill wants to move this thread to "off topic" I'm good for that.

So Lat,

Is this where you dump a little acetone/atf mix in the cylinders and see if it frees up the rings?

Right,
A few teaspoonfuls of MMO then I'll have to close it up and wait 'til the dark of winter to get back to this.
I AM pretty encouraged by the condition of things that I can see. I just need to get some other stuff done first. I probably won't see much more progress of investigation until the new year.

reversing gear

Hi Russ,

I assume the last picture you posted is the reversing gear. But it seams much different than the A4 reversing gear. Could you please explain the differences between the two? The A2 looks much simpler.

Best,
Jim

Hmm, let's see

Hi Jim,
Yes, it's much simpler and much smaller. I tried to find some analogous parts to the A-4 reversing gear. I labeled the a-2 gear parts like the a-4 in attempt to do this. Refer to the diagram to help.
I do see that a locking bar(100) is not needed in the a-2 since the band brake is fixed to the case and not floating like the a-4 band.

The three arms don't seem to always need to be in contact with the "cone" (40) in the a-2. I can't tell yet really what I'm seeing but it looks like the small screw-like link from (79) to (99)is the adjustment for the clutch pack. Probably adjust that first and then adjust the band-brake bolt from outside the case. Perhaps that is needed more often.??
Too many other things to fix at home right now, but I'll post more later—just to muse for for mid-winter blues.
