Rotate the engine

Good Morning,

I was wondering how I could rotate the crank shaft to see if the engine is seized or not.

It is a 1978 Columbia 8.3 I would assume that it is the original engine.

Hello SailingLife.

Here is a link to an old thread on rotating the engine by hand:

Others who know what the access is like on your Columbia 8.3 may have suggestions for you. If you have access to the flywheel, check out the hand crank sold by MMI.

Hope this helps some.

Jack

I bent 3/4 galvanized conduit into a right angle and cut two slots in it with a hacksaw to catch the pin on crankshaft. It works well, no drama. Home Depot also sells a pre-vent version 90 degree piece for $5.

I would pull the spark plugs and spray or squirt some lubricant in there and let seep into the rings. Even WD-40 would be fine.

Personally, I would spend a little more at MMI and get the hand crank. It's only good for one direction, but the A4 is surprising easy to hand crank. If you ever accidentally drained your batteries, not that I ever have... , as long as you have 9ish volts left, that's enough to for the electronic ignition to fire the coil. Even lower voltages work if you have mechanical points.
