Great A4 manual......but
1. the manual is worth every cent I paid for it.......
2. But the engine is still not running right 3. Recent history: a. ....switched old for newly rebuilt A4......ran great b. .. Until we hit rough water.......it stopped working. Found dirt, gunk and water in gas....... c. emptied gas tank......got rid of water in gas......Old "Fram" filter very very dirty.installed .new fram filter.element......new squeeze bulb between gas tank and filter.... d. Ordered Racor separator / filter.....will arrive next week (end of July) e. Engine still wouldn't start......... f. Removed Carb. took it to small engine mechanic....carb full of water, dirt , gunk......mechanic cleaned it thoroughly....found bits of krud in carb jets....... g. installed clean carb.....pumped fuel line full with new bulb.... f. ENGINE STARTED .....but.....but...but..... runs at low rpm......when you advance throttle......engine dies........and when you use the choke....it also dies......... g. Checked compression, spark....all ok ( excellent instruction how to in my new A4 manual). There is gas in the carb. timed engine with the 12 volt light bulb. ......but.....the engine STILL doesn't run right....cuts out at any rpm above idle. h.This is getting bad........I've spent lots of $$$$ for the new rebuilt......and tried all of the above remedies.......but the engine still doesn't perform like it did until we hit that rough water last month...... Please advise..........I believe in the atomic 4 and your dedication to it and to us who use it..... thanks Fred Bear |

I suspect step f) -- carb. still has an obstructed main jet. I'd suggest
re-removing it and using compressed air to blow out all the passages and unscrew the jets that can be and make sure everything is clean. -jonathan |

If the fuel tank is original or metal - change it. An old tank will keep giving crud to your 'new' motor. They are not expensive when you consider the alternatives. Check your filter again.

J.F.B., I recently went thru some crude issues myself. The boat sat unused for several years and the fuel in the carb got quite funky, so I clean it out and motor ran well. Then a few days later I relized that the carb it only one aspect of the system. Thru futher inspection I found that the fuel pump had a small leak. When I took that apart it was rather dirty and all the gaskets were in they're eleventh hour, so I rebuilt it and clean out every passage and the connecting tube to the carb, it was dirty also, same thing with the filter/separater/hoses. Changed every hose for maintainance, safety and confidence. Also ended up changing the tank because I found a pin hole leak in that as well.
Point being, the carb is at the end of the system and if that's fouled then what about every thing before it? Good luck

Ray, Michael and Jon.........
Thanks for the advice on my fuel problem........I'm gonna get the guy who
cleaned the carb to come here and try adjusting it. Either that or get a huge rubber band attached to the prop and wind it up.... ( Atomic 4 "Hybrid") Fred Bear |

I have found that even when you think you have all the passages in the carb clean they are sometimes not. Take a thin wire and run down the passages and see if you can see the other end. Then you will know nothing is blocking it. This has worked for me.
