Clarification of Marvel Mystery Oil and winterizing/spring commissioning

HI all,

Winterizing and following procedure in manual.

It suggests draining oil, adding a quart of MMO and then running engine for a bit to get it nicely distributed in the engine. I did that - I also added a quart of oil cause I was a little afraid of running the engine with just MMO in it. The oil pressure did come up ok but a little more slowly that usual so I think my concern was justified.

The spring commissioning section suggests to top the oil up - not change it.

However, elsewhere on the forum Don states:

"We have never recommended continued use of MMO in the engine oil. However, in cases where it is suspected that carbon and sludge have built up within the crankcase, a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil can be added to the crankcase 5 hours before an oil change to help remove the carbon and sludge, especially in and around oil rings and valve tappets. The residue that mixes with the oil will be removed during the next oil change."

So my question is - just top up and go, or run for 5 hours and then change, or change right off the bat?

Appreciate your thoughts on this matter.

Peter

PS - for my fellow Canadian forumites, MMO can be purchased online from Costco and they deliver it to your door at no charge. 6 quarts for $60+tax

I have never done that. Old oil out - new oil in - put her away. Also note our winter here usually is Jan-Feb, it is still mid 70s now.
